Chapter 3 - The Confession and the Counter-Strike

My heart stopped. The entire world seemed to tilt on its axis. I stared up at Adrian, my wide eyes searching his face for any sign of a joke, any hint of mockery. But there was nothing but raw, blazing, unadulterated devotion.
"Adrian, you can't," I stammered, my insecurities violently rearing their ugly heads. I instinctively tried to pull back, hyper-aware of my soft stomach pressing against his rigid, muscular abdomen. "I am your secretary. I'm not... I'm not the kind of woman a man like you falls in love with. Look at the women you take to galas. They are supermodels. They are flawless. I am..."
"You are everything," Adrian interrupted fiercely, his hands gripping my hips, refusing to let me pull away. He looked at me with a ferocious intensity that made my blood burn. "Those women were camouflage, Evelyn. Plastic props for the paparazzi. They mean absolutely nothing to me. Since the day you walked into my office five years ago and told me my previous accountant was an idiot, I have been captivated by you."
He moved one hand up to cup the back of my neck, his thumb tracing the sensitive skin behind my ear. "I love your brilliant mind. I love your fierce loyalty. And I love your body, Evelyn. Every single soft, beautiful curve of it. I have spent five years keeping my hands to myself because I respected your professionalism, but last night, when I saw you bleeding in that hospital... I realized I would burn this entire city to the ground before I let another day go by without making you mine."
Tears of pure, overwhelming emotion spilled down my cheeks. For my entire adult life, I had been told by society that a plus-size woman was meant to be the funny best friend, the invisible worker bee, the reliable sidekick. I was never meant to be the leading lady. But sitting in the arms of a billionaire mob boss, feeling his absolute worship, I finally let the walls shatter.
I reached up with my good hand, tangling my fingers into his dark hair, and pulled his face down to mine.
The kiss was explosive. It was desperate, hungry, and loaded with five years of suppressed, agonizing tension. Adrian kissed me like a starving man, his lips parting mine, his tongue sweeping into my mouth with a demanding, intoxicating heat. His hands moved over my curves with a reverent, possessive worship, pulling a soft moan from the back of my throat. I felt beautiful. I felt desired. I felt like a queen.
When we finally broke apart, gasping for air, our foreheads resting against each other, the heavy oak doors of the bedroom suddenly vibrated with a rapid, urgent knock.
"Boss!" Luke, Adrian’s head of security, yelled from the hallway. "We have a massive situation!"
Adrian let out a frustrated growl, pressing one last, hard kiss to my lips before carefully untangling himself from me. He stood up, smoothing his shirt, his demeanor instantly switching back from a devoted lover to a ruthless warlord. "Enter."
Luke pushed the door open, his face pale and serious. "Silas just made his move. He realized the accounts are frozen. He just called a summit of all the capos at the downtown warehouse. He’s telling the men that you’ve gone soft, that you’re letting a secretary run the empire, and he’s demanding a vote of no confidence to strip you of your title. If he gets the majority vote tonight, the men will authorize a hit on you."
Adrian’s jaw tightened into a block of granite. "He called a meeting? How convenient. It saves me the trouble of hunting the traitors down one by one."
"Adrian," I said, sitting up, my mind racing with tactical strategy. "Silas is relying on your men believing that I manipulated the accounts without your knowledge. He’s going to paint me as a rogue liability to justify executing me and claiming the throne."
"He isn't going to claim anything except a body bag," Adrian stated, walking over to a hidden wall panel and retrieving a heavy, matte-black handgun. He racked the slide, the metallic clack echoing ominously in the room. "Luke, assemble the elite guard. We are going to the warehouse."
"I’m coming with you," I said, throwing the covers off my legs.
Adrian whipped his head around, his eyes flashing with protective fury. "Absolutely not. You are staying in this fortress where it is safe."
"No, Adrian," I challenged, standing up on my bare feet, ignoring the throbbing ache in my bruised ribs. "Silas attacked me. He used my blood to send you a message. If you walk into that warehouse without me, you validate his claim that I am just a weak, hidden secretary. I am the one who holds the ledgers. I am the one who froze his money. I am going to stand right beside you, and I am going to watch you destroy him."
Adrian stared at me, the protective anger in his eyes slowly melting into a profound, terrifying pride. He walked back to the bed, gripping my chin gently.

"If you walk through those doors by my side tonight, Evelyn," he murmured, his voice thick with absolute promise, "you are no longer just my employee. You are declaring yourself to the entire underworld as my partner. My queen. There is no going back to a normal life after this."
I looked up at the dangerous, beautiful man who had carried me out of the rain. "I never wanted a normal life, Adrian. I just wanted you."
