Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Slaughter

The downtown warehouse was a sprawling, industrial cathedral of concrete and steel, heavily guarded by Silas’s loyalists. The air inside was thick with cigar smoke, tension, and the metallic scent of impending violence. A massive, rusted iron table sat in the center of the room, surrounded by twenty of the most ruthless capos and lieutenants in the Chicago syndicate.
At the head of the table stood Silas Vance. He was a tall, lean man with a scar running down his cheek, pacing back and forth, weaving a masterful web of treason.
"Adrian has lost his mind!" Silas shouted to the murmuring men, slamming his fist onto the iron table. "He is letting a fat, pencil-pushing secretary control our money! She locked us out of the Cayman accounts this morning! Adrian is weak! He’s compromised! We need to vote him out and take back control of our streets before the rival families smell the blood in the water!"
The heavy steel loading doors at the front of the warehouse suddenly groaned, shrieking as they were violently ripped open by a hydraulic winch.
The entire room went dead silent. Twenty handguns were instantly drawn, cocked, and aimed at the entrance.
Adrian Cross walked through the threshold, flanked by a dozen of his most elite, heavily armed enforcers. The sheer, suffocating gravity of his presence made the temperature in the warehouse plummet. He was wearing a bespoke black suit, a long cashmere overcoat resting on his broad shoulders, radiating the terrifying aura of an apex predator returning to his den.
And walking perfectly in step beside him, holding her head high, was me.
I was no longer wearing oversized, sensible corporate attire. Adrian’s personal stylist had procured a breathtaking, form-fitting, deep crimson wrap dress that hugged every single one of my plus-size curves with unapologetic, lethal glamour. The slit in the dress revealed my leg as I walked, my black stilettos clicking sharply against the concrete. Despite the sling holding my left arm and the fading bruise on my temple, I looked absolutely radiant. I looked like a queen arriving for an execution.
"Lower your weapons," Adrian commanded, his voice barely above a whisper, yet it echoed with the force of thunder.
The capos, terrified by the absolute authority of their true boss, slowly lowered their guns. Silas, however, kept his hand hovering near his holster, his face twisting into an ugly mask of panic and rage.
"You brought the secretary to a syndicate meeting, Adrian?" Silas scoffed, desperately trying to maintain his bravado in front of the men. "Are you going to have her take minutes while we strip you of your title?"
Adrian didn't even acknowledge Silas. He walked to the opposite end of the iron table, pulling out a chair. He didn't sit in it himself. He looked at me, gesturing gracefully. I sat down, crossing my legs, resting my good hand on the table. Adrian stood behind me, resting both of his massive hands affectionately, possessively, on my shoulders.
The message to the room was deafeningly clear. I was not a servant. I was his equal.
"Silas has requested a vote of no confidence," Adrian announced to the silent room, his dark eyes sweeping over the traitors. "He claims I am weak. He claims Evelyn illegally froze your operational funds. Evelyn, darling, would you care to present the board with the facts?"
I smiled, a cold, ruthless expression I had learned entirely from the man standing behind me. With my right hand, I tossed a thick, encrypted USB drive onto the center of the iron table. It landed with a heavy clack.
"That drive contains the unredacted financial ledgers of the western syndicate for the last eight months," I addressed the capos, projecting my voice with crystal clarity. "Silas didn't call this meeting to save you from my financial mismanagement. He called this meeting because this morning, I caught him embezzling forty million dollars from your union contracts and pension funds. He was siphoning your money into his own private offshore accounts to fund a coup. I froze the accounts to protect your assets. Silas Vance is a thief, a coward, and a traitor."
The room erupted. The capos turned on Silas, shouting in furious outrage, drawing their weapons once more—this time, aiming them directly at the Underboss.
"It’s a lie!" Silas screamed, drawing his own gun and aiming it frantically at me. "She’s lying! She doctored the books to frame me!"
Before Silas could even attempt to pull the trigger, Adrian moved with a speed that defied human physics. He didn't order his men to fire. He didn't hesitate. Adrian drew his weapon and fired a single, deafening shot.
The bullet struck Silas directly in the kneecap.
Silas shrieked in agony, dropping his gun as his leg completely shattered beneath him. He collapsed onto the concrete floor, writhing in a pool of his own blood, clutching his ruined knee.
Adrian slowly walked around the iron table, his gun lowered but perfectly steady. The capos parted like the Red Sea, terrified of the violence radiating from their boss. Adrian stood over his former best friend, his face devoid of any mercy or hesitation.
"You stole from my family, Silas," Adrian said, looking down at the weeping traitor. "You attempted to fracture my empire. But I could have forgiven that. I could have let you live in exile for the sake of our past."
Adrian raised his gun, aiming it directly at Silas’s chest.
"But you put your hands on my woman," Adrian whispered, the lethal promise echoing in the cavernous warehouse. "And for that, the books are permanently closed."
Two more shots rang out in quick succession.
Silas Vance’s body went completely limp, his reign of treason ending on the cold, dirty concrete floor. Adrian slowly turned around, his weapon still smoking, and looked at the twenty capos standing in stunned, terrified silence.
"Does anyone else have an issue with how my Queen balances the ledgers?" Adrian asked, his voice dripping with deadly calm.

The men frantically shook their heads, holstering their weapons, dropping to their knees in a unified show of absolute submission. The rebellion was crushed. The empire had been purged.
Adrian walked back to me. He offered me his blood-spattered hand. I didn't flinch. I took his hand, standing up from the table, my crimson dress brushing against his suit. We walked out of the warehouse together, leaving the traitors to clean up the mess.
