Chapter 5 - The Queen of the Underworld

Six months later.
The Chicago skyline glittered like a sea of diamonds through the floor-to-ceiling windows of Adrian’s newly constructed, hyper-secure penthouse in the heart of the financial district. The scars from my attack had long since faded, leaving only smooth skin and a profound, radiant confidence that I carried with me every single day.
I stood in the center of the massive walk-in closet, looking at myself in the full-length mirror. I was wearing a breathtaking, custom-made, ivory silk gown that cascaded over my curves like a waterfall. The dress didn't hide my body; it celebrated it. The deep V-neckline showcased my cleavage, and the cinched waist highlighted my hips with unapologetic, explosive glamour.
I was no longer the invisible secretary. I was the Chief Financial Officer of Cross Holdings, managing both the legitimate billionaire investments and the shadowy, untouchable syndicate operations. But more importantly, I was the undisputed Queen of Chicago.
Strong, warm arms wrapped around my waist from behind. Adrian pulled me flush against his back, pressing a soft, lingering kiss to the exposed curve of my neck. He was wearing a flawless, bespoke black tuxedo, looking incredibly handsome and dangerous.
"You look absolutely magnificent," Adrian murmured, his hands gently tracing the flare of my hips, his dark eyes meeting mine in the reflection of the mirror. "Are you ready for the charity gala, Mrs. Cross?"
I smiled, raising my left hand to admire the massive, flawless five-carat diamond resting on my ring finger. Our wedding, held a month ago in a private, heavily guarded villa in Tuscany, had been the most beautiful, perfect day of my life.
"I am always ready, Mr. Cross," I replied, turning around in his arms and wrapping my hands around his neck.
"Good," Adrian smiled, a soft, incredibly tender expression that he reserved solely for me. "Because after we make our appearance and secure the mayor's endorsement, I am bringing you right back to this penthouse to properly worship my wife."
I laughed, a rich, joyous sound that filled the massive suite, leaning up to kiss him deeply.
The men who had attacked me in the rain that night had intended to break me. They had intended to use me as a disposable messenger to tear down a king. But they had made a fatal miscalculation. They didn't realize that under immense pressure, a secretary doesn't break. She becomes a diamond.

I had walked into an emergency room bruised, bleeding, and terrified. But I was walking out as the most powerful, fiercely loved, and protected woman in the city. Adrian’s empire hadn't torn itself apart before sunrise. We had simply rebuilt it together, stronger, richer, and completely bulletproof.
And as Adrian took my hand, leading me out into the glittering night to conquer the city by his side, I knew with absolute certainty that the books of my past were permanently closed, and the beautiful, thrilling chapters of our future had only just begun.
