Chapter 4 - The Final Checkmate

A month later, the annual Monaco Grand Charity Gala was the only event anyone in the elite circles cared about. It was a highly exclusive, invite-only affair held in the grand ballroom of the Hôtel de Paris. I was the guest of honor, representing the Sterling family’s massive philanthropic donations.

I arrived wearing a custom, midnight-blue velvet gown, dripping in authentic diamonds that had been in my family for generations. Adrien escorted me, looking devastatingly handsome in a classic black tuxedo.

The ballroom was a sea of royalty, tech billionaires, and A-list celebrities. The champagne incident was a distant, amusing memory to most of them, a story whispered over crystal flutes. But a desperate animal will always return to the last place it felt powerful.

Midway through the evening, there was a commotion at the entrance.

I turned around to see Cassandra fighting with the heavy security detail at the golden doors. She was wearing a cheap, off-the-rack dress, holding a counterfeit designer clutch, begging the guards to let her inside.

“I am on the list! I am an influencer! You have to let me in, my photographer is in there!” she wailed, trying to push past a massive bouncer.

She had flown back to Monaco on a desperate gamble, hoping that if she could just get photographed inside the gala, she could convince her dwindling followers that she was still part of the elite. She needed the illusion to survive.

I walked slowly toward the entrance, the crowd parting for me out of sheer respect. Adrien shadowed me closely.

“Is there a problem here?” I asked the head of security.

The guard looked relieved to see me. “Miss Sterling. This woman is trying to crash the event. She does not have an invitation, and her name is on the global blacklist.”

Cassandra froze when she saw me. The desperation in her eyes was palpable, sickening.

“Elena, please,” Cassandra begged, completely abandoning her pride. She actually reached out, her hands shaking. “Please. Just let me in for ten minutes. Let me take one photo. I have nothing left. My sponsors are gone. I owe hundreds of thousands in debt. If I don't post from this gala, my career is completely dead.”

I stood there, glittering in diamonds, looking at the woman who had humiliated me for sport. I remembered the cold champagne hitting my face. I remembered the sound of the silk tearing. I remembered her laughing while thousands of people watched.

“You stood on my yacht and told the world that girls like me shouldn't be allowed near luxury,” I said, my voice echoing in the grand foyer. “You thought exclusivity was a weapon you could use to destroy people.”

I looked at the security guard.

“She is not on the list. Have her removed from the premises permanently.”

Cassandra let out a gut-wrenching sob as the guards grabbed her arms and dragged her backward out of the hotel. She was thrust out into the cold, rainy Monaco night, the heavy golden doors shutting decisively in her face, sealing her out of the world she had sacrificed her entire soul to belong to.
