Chapter 5 - The Queen of the Mediterranean

The destruction of Cassandra Vale was absolute.
Without the gala photos, the last of her followers abandoned her. She filed for bankruptcy two months later, moving back into her parents' modest house in the Midwest. She attempted to start a podcast complaining about "toxic billionaires," but nobody listened. She had become entirely irrelevant, a cautionary tale whispered among aspiring influencers about the dangers of biting the hand that owns the ocean.
I, on the other hand, thrived.
The morning after the gala, I stood on the bridge of the flagship yacht, the Mediterranean sun warming my face. The Sterling Maritime Group had just closed its most profitable quarter in a decade. I was in total control of my empire, and the world finally knew exactly who I was.
Footsteps echoed on the polished deck. Adrien walked up beside me, holding two cups of black coffee. He handed me one, his fingers briefly, warmly brushing against mine.
“The new route to Santorini is cleared, Miss Sterling,” Adrien said, a soft, genuine smile playing on his lips.
“I told you to call me Elena,” I corrected him gently, taking a sip of the coffee.
“Elena,” he murmured, the name sounding perfect in his accent. He looked out at the endless blue horizon, then back at me. “You know, I’ve commanded ships for fifteen years. But I have never seen anyone command a room quite like you did last night.”
“Power is easiest to misuse when you’re angry,” I replied, repeating my father’s words. “But when you use it with a clear head... you can rewrite the entire board.”
Adrien stepped slightly closer, the ocean breeze catching his dark hair. “And what does the board look like now?”
I looked at the massive, beautiful yacht beneath my feet, the empire I had secured, and the loyal, brilliant man standing beside me who had bowed when the rest of the world was laughing.

“It looks exactly the way I want it to,” I smiled.
I turned my face toward the sun, completely untouchable, ruling the Mediterranean on my own terms. The girl who had wiped champagne from her face was gone forever. The Queen of the Silver Star had taken her throne, and I was never stepping down again.
