Chapter 1 - The Eleven-Month Audit

The dark blue sedan pulled away from the curb, leaving Grant standing in the glow of the porch light with his mouth open and his mistress shivering in her glittering green dress behind him. He actually punched the mailbox as we drove away.
I leaned back against the leather seat, wrapped my arm around Owen’s small shoulders, and let out a breath I felt I had been holding for nearly a year. In my purse, the digital recorder was already safely shut off, the audio file of Grant threatening to financially starve his pregnant wife securely uploaded to my lawyer’s encrypted server. Grant thought my silence at the dinner table was the shock of a dependent, helpless housewife. He didn't realize it was the absolute focus of a woman watching her prey step willingly into a steel trap.
Grant was right about one thing: I had not worked outside the home in six years. What he conveniently forgot was what I did before I became a mother. I was a senior forensic auditor for a multinational logistics firm. I specialized in finding money that arrogant men tried to hide.
Eleven months earlier, when I was completely oblivious to his infidelity, I had logged into our shared home network to update our property taxes. Grant was meticulous about his corporate passwords, but he was incredibly lazy about his personal cloud syncing. I found a digital receipt for a diamond tennis bracelet. I hadn't received a bracelet. Then I found the lease agreement for a luxury downtown apartment. My name wasn't on it. Tessa's was.

For eleven months, I smiled over morning coffee. I kissed his cheek. I managed his schedule, raised our children, and carried his third child. And while he slept, I systematically dismantled him.
I quietly accepted remote, high-level consulting contracts under my maiden name, routing the substantial income into a blind trust he legally had absolutely no access to. I secured my own private health insurance for me and the children. I cloned his hard drive. I downloaded every corporate expense report, every hidden wire transfer, and every email he had ever sent Tessa on company time. By the time he walked into that dining room to humiliate me, I was already a millionaire on paper, and his entire life was sitting on a flash drive in my purse.
