Chapter 5 - An Empire of Peace

A year later, the summer air was warm and golden.
I sat on the back patio of my home, sipping a glass of iced tea, watching Owen and Lily run through the sprinklers on the pristine green lawn. The baby was asleep in my arms, safe, loved, and completely free from the toxic shadow of the man who had fathered him.
The divorce had been a bloodbath for Grant. Facing decades in federal prison for the embezzlement, he had surrendered completely. I was granted full, permanent legal and physical custody of the children, and he was stripped of all marital assets to pay back the stolen corporate funds. He was currently serving a seven-year sentence in a federal penitentiary.

He had walked into our dining room a year ago, holding another woman's hand, entirely convinced that my silence was a symptom of my weakness.
