Chapter 20 - The Immortal MountainThe silence in the glass pavilion was absolute. As the federal agents dragged the ruined real estate baron out into the crisp Aspen night, the power brokers of the world stared at me in profound, awe-struck terror.

I didn't gloat. I calmly picked up a fresh glass of sparkling water from a passing waiter's tray.
"My apologies for the interruption, ladies and gentlemen," I said, offering the stunned room a radiant, devastatingly beautiful smile. "Please. Enjoy the gala."
I took Jack’s arm and walked out into the cool, starlit night.
The fallout from the Aspen gala was a seismic event in global finance. Reginald Vance’s empire collapsed under the weight of federal investigations and massive international lawsuits. He was denied bail, completely bankrupted, disgraced, and sentenced to thirty years in a federal penitentiary. The Aspen consortium, terrified and deeply apologetic, instantly doubled our funding, offering us a massive performance bonus.
Sullivan Contracting, completely insulated from the blast radius, absorbed the massive vacuum left by Vance’s legitimate assets. We were no longer just a luxury builder. We were a global, untouchable monolith of architecture and infrastructure.
Six months later.
The air in Montana was crisp, carrying the sharp scent of pine and blooming summer wildflowers. The sprawling, timber-frame estate Jack and I had built from the ground up was bathed in the warm, golden light of late afternoon.
I sat on the massive wrap-around deck, wrapped in a light cashmere throw. At my feet, Tommy and Lily were happily building a fortress out of wooden blocks, their bright laughter ringing across the pristine lawn.
The world was perfectly, undeniably quiet.
I heard the soft, familiar footsteps behind me.
Jack walked out through the heavy wooden doors. The ruthless executioner who had helped me burn down a billionaire's empire was completely gone. In his place was just a man—my husband, my equal, the absolute love of my life.
He wrapped his strong arms around my shoulders from behind, burying his face in the crook of my neck, inhaling deeply.
"The final projections for the new European acquisition just cleared," Jack murmured, his deep voice a comforting rumble against my skin. "We officially control the board, Harper. There is no one left to fight."
"There will always be someone who thinks they can take what we have built," I said softly, leaning back into his solid embrace.
"Let them try," Jack smiled, a rogue, brilliant expression touching his lips. He moved his hand down, resting it gently on Lily’s dark hair as she looked up and beamed at her father. "They will find an impenetrable fortress, and a queen who never misses."
Tears of pure, unadulterated joy pricked my eyes. I reached up, wrapping my fingers tightly around Jack’s calloused hand, feeling the simple, hammered rose gold band on my ring finger.
I thought about the long, bloody road that had brought me to this deck. I thought about the toxic music industry, the sabotage, Eleanor, Silas, and Reginald. They had all looked at me and seen a soft, vulnerable target. They had seen a woman they could break, silence, or consume.
They were all rotting in concrete cells, completely destroyed by the very woman they had underestimated.
I leaned my head back, capturing Jack's lips in a deep, passionate, completely intoxicating kiss that sealed our history and ignited our limitless future.
The terrified, accommodating girl who had cried in a lonely Nashville mansion was a ghost, buried permanently under a mountain of steel, titanium, and absolute resilience. The queen had not just taken her throne; she had forged a sovereign empire that no man, no ghost, and no monster could ever tear down.

I was Harper. I was victorious. I was loved.
And this beautiful, brilliant empire of light was going to last forever.
