Chapter 10 - The Unbreakable Tide

Three weeks later, the air was crisp and smelling of pine and salt water.

The media frenzy in New York had been a spectacular bloodbath, but we had left it thousands of miles behind us. Daniel was facing a massive federal indictment for his financial collusion with Vanguard, and the family court judge had permanently stripped him of all custody rights, granting me sole, unchallengeable protection over Julian.

I stood on the edge of the rugged Washington beach, the cold water rushing over my bare feet. The sun was setting, casting brilliant streaks of gold, violent, and crimson across the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean.

I was completely, absolutely free.

I turned around to see Elias walking down the wooden steps from our home, carrying Julian in a carrier strapped to his chest. My son was giggling, his tiny hands grabbing at Elias’s flannel shirt. The sight of them—the two anchors of my soul—made my heart swell with a love so profound it brought tears to my eyes.

Elias stopped in front of me, the ocean breeze ruffling his dark hair. He didn't look like a billionaire titan. He just looked like the man I loved.

"The final paperwork cleared this morning," Elias smiled, his eyes crinkling warmly. "Harrison Freight is officially dissolved and absorbed. He’s never going to hurt you again, Amy."

"I know," I whispered, reaching out to brush a stray curl from Julian’s forehead. "Because of you."

"No," Elias corrected softly, reaching down to take my hand. "Because of you. You survived the fire, Amy. You built the foundation. I just want the honor of standing on it with you."

Slowly, Elias reached into his pocket. He didn't pull out a flashy, ostentatious diamond designed to show off wealth. He pulled out a simple, breathtakingly elegant ring featuring a deep, ocean-blue sapphire, set in brushed platinum.

He didn't drop to one knee in the sand, because he knew we were already equals. He simply looked deep into my eyes, holding my hand against his chest, right over his beating heart.

"Amy, you are the most terrifying, beautiful, brilliant woman I have ever known," Elias murmured, his voice thick with emotion. "I want to wake up to the sound of this ocean with you every single day. I want to build a million wooden toys for our boy. Will you marry me?"

I looked at the man who had seen my scars, who had fought my demons, and who celebrated my strength without ever trying to diminish it.

"Yes," I breathed, throwing my arms around his neck as he spun me in the sand, Julian letting out a joyous shriek between us.

I had spent years shrinking myself to fit into a life that was designed to break me. But as Elias kissed me under the painted Washington sky, surrounded by the roaring, unbreakable tide, I knew my story hadn't ended in ruin. It had simply cleared the path for a beautiful, untouchable masterpiece.
