Chapter 8 - The Architect's Secret
The moment Daniel’s SUV disappeared down the winding coastal road, I turned to Elias, my pulse roaring in my ears.
"Elias, what was that?" I demanded, my hands shaking. "Vanguard Equity is a fifty-billion-dollar private equity firm. They destroy everything they touch. Why did you say you hold his debt?"
Elias took a deep breath, running a hand through his rain-dampened hair. He gently led me back inside the warm, fire-lit living room, sitting me down on the plush sofa before kneeling in front of me.
"When we met, Amy, I told you I was an architect," Elias began softly, taking both of my trembling hands in his. "And I am. But I didn't tell you everything about my family. I wanted you to know me, not my portfolio."
He pulled his phone from his pocket and opened a secure financial dashboard, handing it to me.
"My full name is Elias Vance," he said. "My grandfather founded Vance Capital, the largest venture capital firm in the Pacific Northwest. I left the corporate world ten years ago to design homes because I hated the boardroom. But I still control fifty-one percent of the family trust."
I stared at the screen. The numbers staring back at me were staggering. Generational wealth that eclipsed even the Harrison empire.
"When Vanguard Equity launched their shadow fund to back Daniel’s hostile takeover," Elias explained, his eyes burning with a fierce, unwavering devotion, "they over-leveraged their commercial real estate assets to get the liquid cash. They borrowed blindly. So, yesterday morning, Vance Capital bought all of their commercial debt. Every single penny of it."

My jaw dropped. The gentle, quiet man who spent his weekends building wooden toys for my son and cooking us breakfast was secretly a corporate titan with enough financial firepower to obliterate a small country.
"He thought he was hunting you, Amy," Elias smiled, a dark, brilliant promise in his eyes. "He didn't know he just walked straight into a trap. Pack a bag. We are going to New York. And we are going to burn his fake empire to the ground."
