Chapter 6 - The Viper in the Pacific

The illusion of absolute safety is a dangerous comfort. For exactly one year, the rhythmic crashing of the Puget Sound waves and the warm, grounded presence of Elias had shielded me from the toxic wreckage of my past in New York. I had built a sanctuary for my son, Julian, completely insulated from the ruthless corporate greed of Harrison Freight Systems. But monsters rarely stay buried when there is money on the line.

It began on a Tuesday morning, wrapped in the thick, gray fog typical of the Pacific Northwest. I was in the kitchen, warming a bottle for Julian, when Elias walked in holding a thick, manila envelope. His usually relaxed, smiling face was set in a rigid line of pure tension.

"This was just hand-delivered by a private courier," Elias said quietly, placing the heavy package on the granite island. "He bypassed the gate code. Amy, the return address is from a family court in Manhattan."

My blood instantly ran ice-cold. I set the bottle down, my hands trembling as I tore the seal open. Inside were sixty pages of aggressive, fabricated legal venom. Daniel wasn't just attempting to drag me back into court; he was filing for emergency, full physical custody of Julian.

As I read the accusations, nausea washed over me. Daniel’s new, high-priced legal team had painted my peaceful coastal life as a "reckless, isolated environment." They claimed my consulting business was failing, that Elias was an "unstable, unvetted presence," and that Julian’s welfare was in immediate danger. But the most terrifying document was buried at the back: a petition to freeze the generational wealth trust I had secured for Julian during the divorce, pending the custody investigation.

"He doesn't want his son," I whispered, the paper shaking in my hands as the terrifying reality snapped into focus. "He wants the trust fund. The board stripped him of his CEO title, but if he controls Julian’s estate, he controls the voting shares. He’s trying to buy his way back into power using our baby as leverage."

Elias walked around the island, wrapping his strong arms around my shoulders, anchoring me as the room spun. "He is not taking this boy, Amy," Elias said, his voice a low, uncompromising rumble. "I don't care how much money he thinks he has. He is not touching our family."

Before I could even process Elias using the word our, my phone lit up on the counter. It was a text from Margaret, my former mother-in-law.

Amy, I am so sorry. I tried to stop him. Daniel has partnered with Vanguard Equity. They are funding his legal war. He is on a private jet to Seattle right now. Lock your doors.
