Chapter 1 - The Hand-Picked Pawn

The three sharp knocks against the hotel room door did not sound like a request for entry. They sounded like a demand.

Ethan didn't move toward the door immediately. He stood in the center of the room, the forged cream-colored letter dangling from his fingertips, his green eyes locked onto the screenshot of the fake email glowing on his phone. The entire architecture of the last two and a half years of his life was actively collapsing around him. The grief, the resentment, the forced acceptance of a corporate marriage to Victoria Hayes—all of it had been meticulously engineered by his own mother.

The knocking sounded again, louder this time. "Ethan! Open this door!" Victoria’s muffled voice bled through the heavy wood.

I instinctively stepped in front of Leo, who was sitting on the carpet happily gnawing on a plastic cup, entirely oblivious to the explosive tension suffocating the room. Ethan looked at me, a profound, devastating apology written in the rigid lines of his jaw, before turning and pulling the door open.

Victoria pushed her way into the room, her designer evening gown rustling violently. Her face was flushed with humiliated rage. "Are you completely out of your mind?" she hissed, keeping her voice low but laced with absolute venom. "My father and your mother are sitting in the private dining room downstairs waiting to finalize the merger, and you are up here playing catch-up with some desperate ex who tracked you down?"

"She didn't track me down, Victoria," Ethan said, his voice dropping into a terrifyingly calm, absolute zero register that made her falter. "We walked into the same elevator by accident."

Victoria’s eyes darted around the room, landing with undisguised disgust on Leo's scattered toys, and finally on the cream-colored envelope in Ethan's hand. She let out a cruel, condescending scoff.

"Oh, for God's sake," Victoria sneered, crossing her arms. "She actually kept the letter? Margaret told me she sent that piece of trash over two years ago to get rid of her. Are you really going to let a forged breakup note and a strategically timed baby ruin a billion-dollar corporate alliance?"

The silence that followed her words was so absolute it felt like the oxygen had been sucked out of the room.

Victoria’s arrogant smile instantly vanished as she realized what she had just confessed. She had known. She had known the entire time that Ethan’s mother had forged the documents to destroy our relationship, clearing the path for a "suitable" high-society merger.

Ethan’s face went entirely blank. The last remaining shred of his patience completely evaporated.

"Take the ring off, Victoria," Ethan commanded.

"What?" she stammered, taking a step backward. "Ethan, you can't be serious. Our families—"

"Take the ring off right now, or I will have my security team hold you down and slide it off your finger themselves," Ethan stated, his voice vibrating with a lethal promise of violence. "You knew my mother forged correspondence in my name. You knew my entire reality was a fabricated lie, and you happily played the role of the dutiful, hand-picked replacement. The engagement is over. The merger is dead."

Trembling with sudden, overwhelming panic, Victoria yanked the massive diamond off her finger and threw it onto the hotel bed. "You are making a massive mistake! Margaret will destroy you for this!"

"Tell my mother I look forward to watching her try," Ethan whispered, stepping forward and slamming the hotel door directly in Victoria's face.
