Chapter 9 - Blood on the Steel

It was 5:00 AM. A violent coastal storm began to batter the two-story estate, the rain lashing against the Japanese-style roof. I was still at the granite island, downloading the last of the syndicate's corrupt payrolls, when the perimeter alarms shrieked. It was a high-pitched wail that sliced right through the thunder.
Ethan instantly killed the main power breaker, plunging the entire estate into pitch-black darkness.
"Get behind the island," Ethan ordered, retrieving two heavy, matte-black firearms from a biometric safe beneath the floorboards. He tossed one to me, racking the slide with a metallic crack.
Through the internal security monitors running on emergency power, we watched eight heavily armed mercenaries wearing tactical gear storm across the pristine lawn. They were an elite extraction team hired to seize our server keys and execute the people who had just bankrupted their bosses.
"They breached the front door," Ethan whispered, his voice entirely devoid of fear.
I crouched behind the 304 stainless-steel cabinets. I didn't tremble. I was surrounded by the man who had promised to protect me, inside a fortress we had built together. The heavy steel provided flawless ballistic cover.
The mercenaries moved slowly through the dark foyer, their laser sights cutting through the shadows. They expected to find a panicked, helpless corporate couple. They didn't realize they had just walked into a fatal funnel.
As the first three mercenaries stepped into the archway of the kitchen, Ethan didn't hesitate. He used the reflection of a lightning strike against the steel refrigerator to perfectly track their movements. I triggered the estate’s internal security countermeasures from my mobile device. Blinding, high-intensity strobe lights mounted in the ceiling violently flashed to life, accompanied by a deafening, high-frequency acoustic alarm.

The mercenaries dropped to their knees, clutching their ears, completely blinded and disoriented by the sensory overload.
Before they could recover or fire a single wild shot, Ethan moved like a shadow in the strobe lights. With terrifying, surgical precision, he neutralized the physical threat, zip-tying the unconscious mercenaries to the floor before they even knew what hit them. The physical threat to our sanctuary was permanently dismantled on the very floor we had built to protect us.
