Chapter 1 - The Billion-Dollar Birthright

The rain lashed against the Boston hospital window, but inside my private maternity suite, the silence was absolute. I sat on the edge of the bed, the recorded audio file of Celeste’s gloating voice safely uploaded to my cloud server, and finally opened the black leather folder my lawyer had left for me.
My lawyer, Marcus, was a shark in a bespoke suit, a man who specialized in the intricate, cutthroat world of billionaire trust law. For the past seven months, he had been quietly investigating the true reason Adrian had demanded such a sudden, vicious divorce. Adrian had claimed we simply "grew apart," spinning a narrative to our social circle that I was cold, infertile, and unsupportive of his ambitions as the CEO of Hale Enterprises.
But the documents inside the black folder told a completely different, infinitely more sinister story.
I turned the first page, and the sheer magnitude of Adrian’s deception made my blood run ice-cold. It was a copy of the original Hale Family Trust, drafted by Adrian’s late grandfather. Adrian had always paraded around as the undisputed king of the company, but the trust contained a highly classified, archaic ironclad clause. Adrian did not actually own the fifty-one percent majority voting shares of Hale Enterprises. He only held them in a temporary proxy.
The clause was explicitly clear: Upon the birth of the first legitimate biological grandchild of the Hale bloodline, the fifty-one percent majority shares shall immediately and irrevocably transfer to the child. If the child is a minor, the child’s biological mother shall act as the sole legal custodian and voting proxy of said shares until the child reaches the age of twenty-one.
My breath hitched. I looked down at my six-day-old daughter, sleeping peacefully in her clear bassinet.
Adrian hadn't divorced me because we grew apart. He had divorced me because three weeks after I discovered I was pregnant, I had casually mentioned the trust document I had found in his home office. He knew that the second I gave birth, I would become the absolute legal custodian of his entire empire. He would be reduced to a powerless figurehead. So, he orchestrated a brutal, gaslighting divorce, bullied me out of the house, and spread the rumor that I was barren to ensure his conservative board of directors wouldn't ask questions.
He planned to marry Celeste, a woman he could easily control, and have a child with her to secure his fortune forever. He just needed to get down the aisle before my baby was born.
But my daughter had arrived two weeks early.
As of six days ago, the man preparing to stand at the altar in a custom tuxedo was completely, legally bankrupt. He owned nothing. And the company he had spent his life acting like a god over? It now belonged to the tiny, beautiful girl sleeping beside me, which meant the keys to the kingdom were sitting firmly in the palm of my hand.
I picked up my phone and dialed Marcus. He answered on the first ring.
"Did you listen to the recording?" I asked, my voice devoid of the exhaustion that had plagued me for days.
May you like
"I did," Marcus said smoothly. "And I have the injunction signed by a federal judge. The shares officially transferred to your daughter at the exact moment of her birth. Adrian has been committing corporate fraud for six days by continuing to sign off on company accounts."
"Perfect," I said, standing up and walking toward the closet where my sister had hung a tailored, emerald-green silk dress for my discharge. "Prepare the security team. Adrian wants a traditional wedding. Let's make sure it’s a day he never forgets."
