Chapter 2 - The Chapel of Lies

The Hale family estate in Beacon Hill was a sprawling, ivy-covered masterpiece that screamed old money and untouchable privilege. The private chapel on the grounds was bathed in the soft, golden light of late afternoon. High society's most elite figures—politicians, tech billionaires, and international investors—were seated in the polished oak pews, waiting to witness the union of Adrian Hale and Celeste Van Doren.

I arrived in the back of a black armored SUV, completely bypassing the valet.

I stepped out onto the cobblestone driveway. I was six days postpartum, but the adrenaline singing in my veins made me feel ten feet tall. The emerald-green dress draped perfectly over my healing body, and I wore a pair of diamond earrings Adrian had given me on our first anniversary—a petty, intentional detail I knew would drive him insane.

Marcus stepped out of the vehicle behind me, holding the black leather folder. Flanking us were four massive private security contractors in dark suits. And safely nestled in a top-of-the-line, shielded stroller pushed by my trusted sister, was my daughter.

"Are you ready for this, Nora?" Marcus asked, adjusting his tie.

"I have never been more ready for anything in my life," I replied.

We didn't interrupt the vows. I wasn't interested in a cliché movie moment. I wanted Adrian to sign the marriage license. I wanted him to legally bind himself to Celeste before I dropped the guillotine, ensuring she was legally tethered to his spectacular ruin.

We waited in the lavishly decorated anteroom of the estate's grand ballroom, where the reception was just beginning. The string quartet was playing a lively symphony. Waiters circled with silver trays of vintage champagne. I could hear the clinking of glasses and the low murmur of wealthy guests networking.

Through the cracked double doors, I watched Adrian and Celeste take the stage for the traditional welcome toast. Celeste looked exactly as she had described on the phone: radiant in ivory silk and French lace, beaming with the smug satisfaction of a woman who believed she had just won the ultimate prize. Adrian stood beside her, holding a crystal flute, looking like the king of the world.

"Thank you all for being here," Adrian’s voice echoed through the microphone, smooth and practiced. "Today marks a new beginning. A fresh start. Celeste has brought light back into my life, and together, we are going to build a family and a legacy that will lead Hale Enterprises into the next century."

The crowd applauded politely. Celeste leaned into him, smiling brightly.

I looked at Marcus. He nodded.

I pushed the heavy mahogany doors open. They swung wide with a resounding crash that echoed over the applause.

The string quartet faltered to a screeching halt. One hundred and fifty of Boston’s elite turned their heads in unison.

I walked straight down the center aisle of the ballroom, my heels clicking sharply against the marble floor. My security team formed an impenetrable V-formation behind me, my sister pushing the stroller safely in the center.

Adrian’s crystal champagne flute slipped from his fingers. It shattered against the stage, spraying glass across Celeste’s ivory silk shoes.

"Nora," Adrian choked out, the blood rapidly draining from his face, leaving him a sickly, chalky white.

I stopped at the edge of the stage. The silence in the room was so absolute I could hear the rain tapping against the ballroom windows.

"Hello, Adrian," I said, my voice carrying effortlessly without a microphone. "I brought your wedding gift."
