Chapter 5 - A New Reign

A year later, the Boston skyline looked beautiful from the floor-to-ceiling windows of the CEO’s office at Hale Enterprises.
I sat behind the massive mahogany desk, reviewing the quarterly earnings report. The company was no longer struggling under the weight of Adrian’s reckless ego. Since I had stepped in as the legal proxy for my daughter, I had fired the toxic board members who had enabled him, promoted brilliant, innovative leaders, and expanded our portfolio into sustainable tech. Profits were up thirty percent, and the industry lauded the "new era" of the Whitaker-Hale legacy.
The door to my office opened, and Marcus walked in, carrying two cups of artisanal coffee. He smiled, handing me one.
"The European merger just closed," Marcus announced, sitting in the leather chair across from my desk. "And the legal team finalized the remaining paperwork for the estate. The Beacon Hill property is officially secured under the trust."
"Excellent work, Marcus," I said, taking a sip of the hot coffee. "Any news on the appeal?"
Marcus scoffed, a genuine laugh escaping him. "Adrian's public defender tried to file for a sentence reduction, but the judge threw it out. He’s serving his full eight years. Celeste filed for an annulment the day after the wedding and moved to Los Angeles. Last I heard, she's trying to rebrand as a wellness influencer, completely denying she ever knew him."
I smiled, looking at the framed photograph sitting on my desk. It was a picture of my daughter, Clara, sitting on a picnic blanket, laughing in the sunshine. Her gray-blue eyes were bright and entirely devoid of the shadows her father had tried to cast over her life.

Adrian had thought he could discard me. He thought that because I was quiet, I was weak. He believed the narrative he built around himself, convinced that power was an inherent right rather than a fragile privilege. He never realized that the most dangerous piece on a chessboard isn't the king—it's the queen who knows exactly when to move.
I took another sip of my coffee, turning my attention back to the massive pile of expansion contracts on my desk. I had a billion-dollar empire to run, a beautiful daughter to raise, and a spectacular, unbothered life to live. Adrian Hale had tried to destroy me in a hospital room, but in the end, all he did was hand me the crown.
