Chapter 3: The Dawn Raid

The sun rose over Manhattan, painting the skyline in brilliant streaks of gold and crimson. Inside the penthouse, the atmosphere was entirely devoid of warmth.

Sebastian—or rather, Arthur Vance—sat at the massive marble island, a sleek black laptop open in front of him. Natalia stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, sipping a double espresso, her dark eyes scanning the waking city below. The facade of the perfect marriage was completely gone. They were in the business of extraction now.

"She took the bait," Natalia said, her voice dripping with a thick, aristocratic Russian accent she no longer bothered to hide. "The crying, the suitcase. She ran exactly like you said she would. Naive little rich girl."

Arthur smirked, his fingers flying across the keyboard. "She was always predictable. She wanted a fairy tale, and I gave it to her. Now that she's out of the penthouse, I can trigger the final liquidation. By the time her lawyers figure out what happened, her trust funds will be scattered across a dozen shell companies in the Caymans, and we will be on a private jet to Geneva."

"Just execute the transfer, Arthur," Natalia sighed, checking her diamond-encrusted watch. "I am tired of this city. And I am tired of wearing her perfume so you wouldn't smell me on your collar."

Arthur hit the final keystroke to initiate the master transfer of his wife’s inheritance. He leaned back, waiting for the green confirmation screen.

Instead, the screen flashed a harsh, glaring red.

ERROR: ACCESS DENIED. ACCOUNT FROZEN.

Arthur frowned, leaning forward. He typed the master password again.

ERROR: CREDENTIALS INVALID. BALANCE: $0.00.

"What is it?" Natalia asked, noticing the sudden, sharp tension in his shoulders.

"The offshore routing hub is locked," Arthur muttered, a bead of cold sweat forming at his temple. "It says the balance is zero. That’s impossible. The biometric lock requires my thumbprint to alter the routing structure."

"Arthur," Natalia snapped, walking over to the island. "Fix it. Now."

Before Arthur could open a backdoor terminal, the serene quiet of the penthouse was violently shattered.

It started as a low, mechanical hum, rapidly escalating into a deafening roar. Natalia looked out the window just in time to see a black, unmarked tactical helicopter hovering level with their terrace.

"Arthur!" she screamed.

The heavy steel doors of the private elevator did not just open; they were blown off their tracks with a concussive blast that shook the marble floors.

"FBI! GET ON THE GROUND! SHOW ME YOUR HANDS!"

A dozen heavily armed tactical agents flooded the kitchen, assault rifles raised, laser sights painting Arthur and Natalia’s chests in a grid of red dots.

Arthur froze, his hands instinctively shooting into the air. Natalia dropped her espresso cup; it shattered against the marble, the dark liquid pooling like blood.

"On the ground! Now!" the lead agent roared, kicking Arthur’s legs out from under him.

Arthur hit the floor hard, the breath knocked from his lungs. Cold steel cuffs were violently ratcheted around his wrists. He pressed his face against the freezing marble—the exact same spot where his wife’s handwritten note had rested twenty-four hours earlier.

"This is a mistake!" Arthur shouted, desperately trying to project the arrogant authority of a billionaire CEO. "I am Sebastian Whitmore! I demand to speak to my attorneys! You have no jurisdiction here!"

A tall man in a tailored trench coat stepped through the wreckage of the elevator doors. Special Agent Miller looked down at Arthur, his expression one of absolute, clinical disgust.

"Sebastian Whitmore doesn't exist," Agent Miller said, pulling a folded piece of paper from his coat. "And neither does your money."

Miller dropped the paper onto the floor, right in front of Arthur's face. It was a printed copy of the email Graham had sent. Attached to it was a photograph of Arthur and Natalia’s real marriage certificate from Moscow.

"Your wife says hello, Arthur," Miller smiled coldly. "She also says thanks for forging her name as the primary stakeholder on all your illicit holding companies. It gave her the absolute legal authority to hand your entire empire over to the federal government."

Arthur stared at the paper, his brilliant, calculating mind finally comprehending the sheer magnitude of his destruction. The naive, pregnant woman he thought he had broken hadn't run away to cry.

She had burned his world to ash and locked the door behind him.
