Chapter 6: The Arraignment

The federal courthouse in lower Manhattan was an absolute circus. Dozens of news vans lined the streets, and reporters swarmed the marble steps like sharks tasting blood in the water.
Inside Courtroom 3B, the atmosphere was suffocating. Arthur sat at the defense table, wearing a tailored suit his lawyers had managed to procure, though it hung slightly loose on his frame. He projected an aura of arrogant confidence, whispering to his legal team. He believed he was going to walk out of those doors today. He believed his hidden crypto funds would buy his freedom.
The heavy wooden doors at the back of the courtroom swung open.
The ambient chatter of the gallery instantly died. Every head turned.
I walked down the center aisle. I wasn't wearing the soft, pastel colors Arthur had always preferred on me. I wore a razor-sharp, tailored crimson blazer over a black maternity dress, my hair pulled back into a sleek, unforgiving knot. Flanked by two federal marshals and Special Agent Miller, I moved with the absolute authority of an executioner.
Arthur turned around.
The smug confidence on his face shattered into a million pieces. His breath visibly caught in his throat. He looked at me, truly seeing me for the first time in three years. Not as a prop in his grand illusion, but as the architect of his total destruction.
I didn't look away. I held his gaze, my eyes devoid of any pity, any love, any hesitation. I took a seat in the front row, directly behind the federal prosecutor.
The judge banged his gavel. "We are here for the bail hearing of Arthur Vance, aliases Sebastian Whitmore, charged with eighty-four counts of wire fraud, grand larceny, and federal conspiracy."
Arthur's lawyer immediately stood up. "Your Honor, my client is a pillar of the business community. He is a devoted father-to-be. He has deep ties to this city. We request bail be set at ten million dollars, which we are prepared to post immediately."
The federal prosecutor stood up, buttoning his jacket. "Your Honor, the prosecution strongly objects to bail. The defendant is a massive flight risk. Furthermore, we have a sworn affidavit from the primary whistle-blower—the defendant's legal wife—detailing his access to offshore crypto-wallets and his attempts to hire individuals to intimidate witnesses from behind bars."
The prosecutor turned and gestured toward me.
"With the court's permission, the witness has requested to make a brief statement regarding her safety if the defendant is released."
The judge nodded. "Proceed."
I stood up. The courtroom was dead silent. I didn't walk to the podium; I stood right where I was, ensuring Arthur had to turn and look at me.
"Your Honor," I began, my voice ringing clear and steady off the mahogany walls. "The man sitting at that table spent three years convincing me I was the center of his world, while systematically using my name to forge an international criminal empire. Two days ago, he used a smuggled phone in federal holding to place a bounty on my head to prevent me from testifying."
Arthur slammed his fist on the table. "That is a lie! She is lying!"
"Order!" the judge roared, banging the gavel.
I didn't flinch. I looked directly into Arthur's manic, desperate eyes.
"He believes money can buy his way out of the consequences of his actions," I continued, my voice dropping to a lethal, freezing pitch. "But his money is gone. His empire is gone. And if he walks out of these doors today, he will not stay to face justice. He is a coward who hides behind fake names and stolen wealth."
Arthur lunged forward, restrained instantly by two federal marshals who shoved him back into his chair. "You are nothing without me!" he screamed, the mask of the billionaire completely destroyed, revealing the pathetic, desperate criminal underneath.
I smiled. A cold, victorious smile that sealed his fate.
"I am everything," I said softly, but loud enough for him to hear. "You were just a parasite."
The judge slammed his gavel one final time. "The defendant's behavior in this courtroom alone proves he is a danger to the community and a severe flight risk. Bail is denied. Remand the defendant to federal custody pending trial."

As the marshals dragged Arthur out of the courtroom, kicking and screaming my name, I placed a hand over my stomach. The baby kicked, strong and vibrant.
The war was over. I had won.
