Chapter 5: The Shadow War

Rain lashed against the windows of the Brooklyn safe house. I sat on the small sofa, wrapped in a thick wool blanket, watching the news broadcast on Graham’s laptop.

The headline flashing across the screen was everything I had prayed for: BILLIONAIRE REAL ESTATE MOGUL ARRESTED IN MASSIVE FEDERAL STING. FBI SEIZES ASSETS NATIONWIDE.

The footage showed Arthur being led out of the penthouse in handcuffs, his face shielded by federal agents. A profound, bone-deep sense of vindication washed over me.

Graham walked into the room, handing me a mug of herbal tea. He looked exhausted, having spent the last forty-eight hours actively monitoring the digital fallout, but his eyes were bright with adrenaline.

"The federal prosecutor just confirmed your immunity deal is signed and sealed," Graham said, sitting in the armchair opposite me. "You are completely insulated. But we have a slight complication."

My grip tightened on the warm mug. "What kind of complication?"

Graham opened his tablet, pulling up a series of intercepted text messages. "Arthur used his one phone call from federal lockup. He didn't call his lawyer. He called a fixer—a man known in the underworld for 'cleaning up' loose ends. The feds missed the burner phone connection."

My heart skipped a beat, but the panic that would have consumed me a week ago was entirely absent. I was no longer prey.

"What did he tell the fixer?" I asked, my voice steady.

"He offered him two million dollars from a hidden crypto wallet if he could locate you before the bail hearing on Friday," Graham explained. "Arthur knows that if you testify at the bail hearing, the judge will deny his release. If he gets out on bail, he will vanish. He has resources we haven't found yet."

"He wants to silence me," I said, looking at the dark screen of my phone on the coffee table.

"He sent men to your family's estate in the Hamptons this morning," Graham said grimly. "Security turned them away, but they are actively hunting you. We need to move you to a secure federal location until the trial."

I looked down at my stomach, placing a protective hand over my unborn child. Arthur thought he could still use fear to control me. He thought the shadows would keep him safe.

"No," I said, looking up at Graham with absolute, unyielding resolve. "I am done hiding."

Graham frowned. "It isn't safe."

"It will never be safe as long as he thinks I am afraid of him," I countered, standing up. "He expects a terrified, pregnant woman cowering in a motel room. If I hide, he controls the narrative. I am going to the bail hearing, Graham. I am going to look him in the eye, and I am going to make sure the judge denies bail."

Graham studied my face for a long moment. He saw the fire that had been ignited the moment I read that note on the kitchen island. He smiled, a fierce, proud expression.

"If we are doing this," Graham said, closing his tablet, "we do it right. We need to make sure the media sees you not as a victim, but as a queen who just executed a coup."

"I need a new suit," I said, a dangerous smile touching my lips. "And I need you to arrange a federal escort. Arthur Vance is about to learn what happens when you corner a mother."
