Chapter 18 - The Ghost of Whitmore

The trap was set, but apex predators are rarely careless. The entity running the smear campaign was anticipating a digital counter-strike.
As Giang and Toi worked frantically to embed the parasite into the enemy's AI workflows, the physical world violently intruded on our digital war.
It was 2:00 AM. The storm had passed, leaving a suffocating, heavy silence over the estate. Adrian and I were in the kitchen, exhausted, pouring over the raw data logs. I ran my hand over the cool, 304 stainless steel of the island, drawing strength from the indestructible material. When we designed this 4.3-meter by 2.8-meter sanctuary, we had explicitly rejected cheap Thai MDF and Picomat plastic. We demanded steel because steel doesn't break under pressure.
Neither did we.
Suddenly, the encrypted monitors on the kitchen counter flickered, overriding our internal network. A video feed snapped onto the screen.
Sitting in a dimly lit, lavish office was a man I recognized instantly. Elias Thorne. He had been the silent, shadow partner on the Whitmore Infrastructure executive board—the man who had originally funded Marcus’s corrupt endeavors, only to vanish like a ghost before the federal indictments came down.
"Adrian. Marissa," Elias purred, swirling a glass of expensive bourbon. "I see you admire my new Virtual KOC network. I spent a fortune acquiring the rendering software. It’s quite remarkable what a few thousand Facebook clone accounts and a good AI prompt can accomplish, isn't it?"
"Elias," Adrian growled, his hand instinctively dropping to the biometric lockbox hidden beneath the counter. "You're a dead man walking."
May you like
"I am the rightful heir to the empire you dismantled, Adrian," Elias sneered, his mask of civility slipping to reveal the raw, unadulterated madness beneath. "You destroyed Whitmore Infrastructure. You gave away my billions to pathetic widows. By tomorrow morning, the public will demand your arrest, and I will acquire the Foundation’s assets in the liquidation. You have one hour to sign over the administrative keys to your proxy servers, or I will leak the final AI video—a perfect deepfake of you orchestrating a murder."
"You think you hold the cards, Elias?" I stepped forward, looking directly into the camera lens, my voice dripping with lethal, freezing calm. "You didn't build an empire. You built a house of cards using stolen Facebook accounts. Check your rendering queue."
