Chapter 2 - The Heiress Revealed

The next forty-eight hours were a whirlwind of medical evaluations, tears, and absolute truth.
Up in the sprawling, multi-million-dollar penthouse overlooking Lake Michigan, Eleanor brought in a private geneticist. The expedited DNA test confirmed what Eleanor’s heart already knew. I was Clara Crawford. The sole heir to a two-billion-dollar real estate empire.
We sat on the velvet sofa, drinking tea, crying as we filled in the missing decades. I learned that the police believed my kidnappers had panicked when the manhunt intensified, abandoning me near the church mission. Eleanor had spent millions searching for me, never giving up hope, never changing the locks on the Waverly estate.
“He told me I was nothing,” I whispered, staring at the Chicago skyline. “He said I had no one. He used my isolation as a weapon to control me.”
Eleanor placed her warm, manicured hand over mine. “You are a Crawford. We do not tolerate men who think they can control us. And we certainly do not forgive men who try to break us.”
Meanwhile, Richard was experiencing the worst weekend of his life.
He had gone back to our house, desperately trying to call my phone, which Eleanor had thrown into the trash. He called the hotel dozens of times, begging to speak to me, screaming at the concierge that he was my husband. He realized, with sickening clarity, that he hadn't just humiliated his dependent wife—he had publicly abused the heir to the most powerful family in the Midwest.
On Monday morning, Richard thought he could salvage the situation. He showed up at the Crawford Corporate Tower downtown, carrying a massive bouquet of expensive roses, demanding to see his wife.
