Chapter 4 - The Delivery Room Ambush

Three weeks later, my water broke.

I was rushed to the VIP maternity wing at Northwestern Memorial, surrounded by Eleanor and a team of top-tier doctors. The labor was intense, but for the first time in my life, I wasn't afraid. I wasn't alone. I had a mother holding my hand, brushing the hair from my forehead, telling me how strong I was.

At 2:14 AM, my beautiful, healthy daughter, Lily, was born.

But Richard, desperate and facing imminent arrest for the financial fraud my lawyers had exposed, made one final, catastrophic mistake. He had paid a hospital orderly to tip him off when I was admitted. He thought that if he could just get into the room, if he could hold his child, he could manipulate the media and use the baby as leverage to force a settlement.

He burst through the double doors of the maternity ward, looking deranged, his suit wrinkled and unwashed.

“Claire!” he shouted, pushing past a startled nurse. “That’s my daughter! You can’t keep my daughter from me!”

He made it exactly ten feet down the hallway.

Four Crawford security contractors stepped out of the shadows, forming an impenetrable wall of muscle. Richard tried to shove past them, but they grabbed him, effortlessly slamming him against the hospital wall.

“Let me go! I have rights!” Richard screamed, thrashing wildly.

I watched through the glass window of my suite, holding little Lily securely against my chest.

Two Chicago police detectives stepped out of the elevator. They didn't look sympathetic. They walked straight up to Richard, pulled his arms behind his back, and locked heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.

“Richard Sterling, you are under arrest for federal wire fraud, identity theft, and corporate embezzlement,” the detective said, his voice carrying down the quiet hallway.

Richard looked through the glass. Our eyes met. He was expecting the terrified, compliant woman he had bullied for years. Instead, he saw a Crawford. I didn't look away. I simply turned my back on him, focusing entirely on my beautiful daughter as the police dragged my ex-husband away to a holding cell.
