Chapter 5 - The Crawford Legacy

Two years later, the Chicago skyline glittered in the evening twilight.

I stood on the balcony of the Crawford Corporate Tower, wearing a tailored emerald suit, holding a glass of sparkling water. The transition had been challenging, but it was the most empowering period of my life. I had legally changed my name back to Clara Crawford. I was the Vice President of Operations, working side-by-side with my mother to expand our empire.

Richard was a distant, pathetic memory. He had been convicted on multiple counts of fraud and sentenced to eight years in federal prison. Because of his criminal convictions and documented history of abuse, the family court had permanently stripped him of all parental rights. He would never see Lily. He would never touch a dime of our money. He was exactly what he had tried to make me: completely alone, with nothing.

The glass doors slid open behind me.

Eleanor stepped out, holding two-year-old Lily in her arms. Lily was laughing, her small fingers playing with the vintage silver bracelet that now rested securely on her own mother’s wrist.

“The board is ready for your presentation, Clara,” Eleanor smiled, her eyes filled with an absolute, fierce pride.

“Tell them I’ll be right there,” I said, walking over to kiss my daughter’s cheek.

I looked out over the sprawling city below. Richard had once stood in a lobby and told me I had no family, no money, and no home. He was right about one thing. I didn't have a home with him. I had an empire. And nobody would ever tell me to pick my life up off the floor again.
