Chapter 4 - The Checkmate

The next morning, I sat at my kitchen table, staring blankly into a mug of coffee.

Daniel and Rachel stood on the other side of the marble island, smiling with sickening sweetness. A stack of legal documents sat directly in front of me, next to a black pen.

"Just sign these, sweetheart," Daniel coaxed, his hand resting on my shoulder. "It’s just routine insurance paperwork. You look so tired today. Once this is done, you can go right back to bed."

"And if I don't sign?" I asked softly.

Rachel exchanged a cold look with Daniel. "Then we'll have to call the doctors, Elena. You haven't been in your right mind lately."

I picked up the pen.

Before the ink could touch the paper, the front door of our house didn't just open—it was violently kicked off its hinges.

Daniel jumped back, shouting in terror as four men in tailored black suits flooded the kitchen. But it was the man who walked in behind them that made my husband turn the color of ash.

"Mr. Thorne?" Daniel stammered, his eyes wide with shock and sudden, desperate greed. "I... I didn't expect you. If this is about my startup pitch, I can—"

"I don't care about your startup, Daniel," Silas interrupted, his voice echoing like a death knell in my kitchen. He didn't look at Daniel; his dark, intense gaze was locked entirely on me.

Silas walked straight past my terrified husband, pulled out the chair next to me, and gently placed his hand over mine, taking the pen away.

"Who... what is going on?" Rachel shrieked.

Silas finally turned his freezing gaze to them. "I am Elena's newly appointed legal counsel and trustee. I also happen to be the man who just bought the debt to your failing company, Daniel. And as of 8:00 AM this morning, I have frozen every bank account tied to your name."

Daniel couldn't breathe. He looked from Silas to me, the realization finally hitting him that the woman he thought he had broken had just checkmated him.

"You can't do that!" Daniel yelled, panicking. "This is my house!"

"This house belongs to my client," Silas corrected lethally. "And since my private medical team drew her blood at 3:00 AM and found heavy traces of unauthorized sedatives, the police waiting in your driveway are fully prepared to charge you both with conspiracy, fraud, and aggravated assault."

Red and blue lights flashed through the kitchen windows.

Rachel began to sob, sinking to the floor, while Daniel stared at me in absolute, soul-crushing defeat.

"Elena, please," Daniel begged, falling to his knees as the officers walked through the shattered front door. "I'm your husband."

I stood up, the fog of the last three weeks completely gone. I looked down at the man who had tried to steal my sanity, and I felt nothing but power.

"Not anymore," I said coldly.

As they dragged Daniel away in handcuffs, Silas stepped up behind me, draping his warm, expensive suit jacket over my shoulders.

"How do you feel?" Silas murmured, his presence completely enveloping me.

I looked at the billionaire who had just burned my nightmares to the ground, a real smile touching my lips for the first time in months.

"Awake," I answered.
