Chapter 7: The High Society Guillotine

Three months later, the ashes of my former life had been entirely swept away, replaced by a titanium foundation of wealth, power, and an unbreakable partnership.

It was a freezing December night in Manhattan, but the grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was practically burning with electric energy. It was the annual Sterling-Hayes Winter Charity Gala, the most exclusive and highly anticipated event of the social season. And tonight, it was my official debut to the world as the sole reigning Matriarch of the dynasty.

I stood in the VIP suite overlooking the ballroom, making a final adjustment to my custom, emerald-green silk gown. The dress hugged my curves flawlessly, a daring slit running up the thigh, paired with a diamond necklace that cost more than Daniel’s entire miserable existence.

The door opened, and Silas walked in.

He stopped dead in his tracks. Dressed in a flawless black tuxedo, he looked like a dark god of corporate warfare, but his eyes were completely unguarded. He crossed the room slowly, his gaze sweeping over me with a raw, burning hunger that stole the breath straight out of my lungs.

"You look like a Queen ready to conquer the world," Silas whispered, stopping inches in front of me.

"I feel like one," I breathed, leaning into his solid, radiating warmth.

Since the day he kicked down my door, Silas and I had become inseparable. The alliance of survival had rapidly, inevitably evolved into a consuming, passionate romance. He didn't want a quiet wife; he wanted a warlord. And he worshipped the ground I walked on.

"There is a minor pest downstairs," Silas murmured, his hands gently gripping my waist. "Daniel’s mother, Evelyn, somehow bypassed the outer perimeter. She’s currently standing near the champagne fountain, telling anyone who will listen that you framed her son to steal his company."

A cold, vicious smile spread across my face. "Is she now?"

"Shall I have security throw her into the snow?" Silas asked, his thumb brushing my lower lip.

"No," I replied, my eyes flashing with predatory anticipation. "Let’s go greet our guests. I want to execute her publicly."

Silas chuckled, offering me his arm.

We descended the grand sweeping staircase into the ballroom. The moment the crowd saw us, the orchestra seemed to quiet. The murmurs of five hundred of the most powerful people in the hemisphere died down to an absolute, hushed silence. Every eye in the room was fixed on us.

We navigated the floor effortlessly, accepting the bowed heads and respectful greetings of senators and hedge fund managers. We stopped directly in front of Evelyn.

Evelyn was wearing a garish, outdated gown, clutching a glass of champagne, her face twisted in a bitter, venomous sneer.

"Elena," Evelyn spat, her voice shrill enough to draw the attention of the surrounding billionaires. "How dare you show your face here after what you did to my boy? He is rotting in a cell because of your lies!"

The room went dead silent.

Silas’s eyes turned pitch black, his hand instinctively dropping toward his side, ready to physically remove the threat. But I placed a calm hand on his chest, stopping him.

"Your son is in a cell, Evelyn, because he is a convicted felon," I said smoothly, my voice projecting clearly through the quiet ballroom. "He was caught on federal wiretaps discussing my murder with his mistress. But I suppose accountability was never a trait you taught him in that heavily mortgaged suburban house of yours."

Evelyn turned red, trembling with rage. "You arrogant little—"

"Careful, Evelyn," I cut her off, my voice dropping to a freezing, lethal pitch. "Before you say another word, you should know that Thorne Industries purchased the mortgage to your home yesterday afternoon. You missed two payments while trying to fund your son’s pathetic legal defense."

Evelyn froze. The champagne flute shook in her hand.

"I am the CEO of the bank that holds your deed," I smiled, stepping forward, leaning in so only she and the terrified elite around us could hear. "If you do not leave my gala this exact second, I will foreclose on your house tomorrow morning, and I will personally watch the sheriff throw your belongings onto the curb. Do you understand me?"

Evelyn looked at me, then at the towering, terrifying presence of Silas, and finally realized she was staring into the jaws of a leviathan. She dropped her glass, turned on her heel, and practically ran toward the exit, sobbing in humiliation.

I turned back to the stunned ballroom and flicked my wrist toward the orchestra. The music resumed instantly, the crowd scrambling to pretend nothing had happened, absolutely terrified of drawing my ire.

Silas wrapped his arm around my waist, pulling me flush against him in front of the entire world, and kissed me. It was a deep, consuming claim that tasted of victory, power, and unbreakable devotion.
