Chapter 6 - The Silicon Valley StrikeFor fourteen blissful months, the rhythm of my life in Carmel was a symphony of ocean waves and absolute peace. The brutal divorce settlement had left me with a staggering amount of capital, which I didn't just sit on. I channeled my newfound freedom into launching a high-end digital consulting firm, specializing in crisis management and brand elevation for the West Coast elite.

I was sitting in my sunlit home office, reviewing the quarterly earnings report, when my phone buzzed. It was Charlotte.

"Mom," her voice was tight, laced with a familiar, terrifying panic. "You need to log onto Facebook right now. It’s Julian’s tech startup. We’re under a massive cyber-attack."

I immediately opened my laptop. Julian’s company, a rapidly growing green-energy tech firm, was in the middle of securing a massive Series B funding round. But as I pulled up their corporate pages, the blood drained from my face.

A coordinated network of themed drama pages—with names like Silicon Valley Exposed and The Real Tech Scandals—were blasting a terrifyingly realistic video. The video showed Julian allegedly accepting bribes from corrupt city officials to bypass environmental regulations.

"Charlotte, this is completely fabricated," I said, my heart pounding as I watched the cinematic-quality footage.

"I know it is! But it looks so real!" she cried. "The investors are already threatening to pull out. Mom, someone is forcing millions of views onto this video. The algorithm is going crazy."

I narrowed my eyes, recognizing the dark-web mechanics immediately. "It’s a deepfake. A highly advanced one, likely powered by a text-to-video AI engine like Seedance 2.0. And the views aren't organic, sweetheart. Someone bought an army of black-market Facebook VIA clone accounts to artificially boost the engagement and spam the comment sections."

"Who would do this?" she asked, her voice breaking.

The answer hit me with the force of a tidal wave. Richard.

My ex-husband was financially ruined, but his mistress, Valerie, had left him for a notoriously ruthless Silicon Valley tech investor named Silas Vance. Rumor had it that Silas enjoyed playing dirty, and Julian’s green-energy firm was directly competing with one of Silas's newly acquired tech subsidiaries for a massive state contract. Silas didn't just want to win the contract; he had hired a desperate, broke Richard as a consultant to execute a digital hit on his own son-in-law out of pure spite.

"They are trying to bankrupt Julian to punish us," I told my daughter, a cold, calculated fury replacing my shock. "They think they can use digital smoke and mirrors to destroy our family."

"What do we do?" Charlotte asked.

"Tell Julian to hold the line," I commanded. "They picked a fight with the wrong mother."
