Chapter 5 - The Mother

The hallway finally fell quiet. The heavy, suffocating darkness that had hovered over my life for the past year was entirely gone, dragged out the doors in handcuffs.
Maria Delgado let out a long, heavy breath and knelt beside my wheelchair. She placed a gentle, warm hand over mine. "Are you alright, Mrs. Ellery?"
"I am," I smiled, a genuine, radiant expression of absolute peace fighting through the physical exhaustion. "But my name is Claire. Just Claire."
"Well, Claire," Maria smiled back, her eyes shining with profound respect. "Would you like me to wheel you into the nursery? I think there is a little boy who is very eager to properly meet his mother."
She wheeled me through the secure doors of the nursery, the soft, rhythmic beeping of the monitors wrapping around me like a warm embrace. Maria gently lifted Henry from his bassinet, swaddled perfectly in his pale blue blanket, and placed him into my waiting arms.
I looked down at his tiny, perfect face. He had a shock of dark hair and small, grasping fingers that instantly wrapped around mine. The physical pain of the surgery faded into nothingness, replaced by a fierce, overwhelming wave of pure, unconditional love.
Graham had thought I was too tired, too hormonal, and too weak to fight him. He thought he could steal my child, my wealth, and my sanity while I was lying in a hospital bed.

I kissed Henry's soft forehead, breathing in the sweet, clean scent of his skin. We were safe. We were free. And as I held my entire world in my arms, I knew that the man who had tried to destroy us had only succeeded in giving me everything I ever truly needed.
