Chapter 2 - The Confession

Alistair stepped closer.

He looked at her faded blue sweater.

Her unpainted nails.

The quiet, simple life she had chosen over billions of dollars.

“I spent five years looking for you,” he whispered.

“You should have stopped after five minutes,” Cecilia replied.

“Why did you leave without a word?”

She almost laughed.

The sound was bitter and hollow.

“Diana Hemsley.”

Alistair froze.

“The writing desk,” Cecilia continued, her voice completely devoid of emotion. “The night of the charity gala. I took the quiet corridor, Alistair. I saw everything.”

The air left Alistair’s lungs.

For five years, he had imagined a hundred reasons why she vanished.

Kidnapping.

A secret illness.

A mental breakdown.

He had never imagined it was because she had witnessed the exact moment he destroyed their vows.

“I know,” Cecilia said. “That’s why I left. If you could destroy our marriage for something that meant nothing, what would you do for something that actually mattered?”
