Chapter 10 - The Chicago Gambit

Glass rained down on me like deadly confetti as the tactical team opened fire on Elias. He was a blur of lethal motion, using the darkness and the complex layout of the office to his advantage. He dispatched two of Victoria's men before they even realized where he was, utilizing the combat skills he had clearly honed during his time with the syndicate.
I didn't stay hidden. I low-crawled into the server room, my hands slick with sweat. The dead man switch wasn't a bluff, but it wasn't set to ten minutes. It was set to manual execution. I yanked my encrypted emergency drive from its hidden compartment in the false floorboard. I jammed it into the standalone terminal.
Command: OVERRIDE. Execute Protocol: Scorched Earth.
The screen lit up. I was initiating a mass, irreversible transfer of all of Obsidian Vanguard’s liquid assets—over two billion dollars—directly into decentralized, untraceable charitable trusts across the globe, simultaneously triggering an automated data dump to the New York Times investigative desk.
Suddenly, a hand wrapped around my throat, hauling me backward. It was Victor. His nose was broken, blood pouring down his chin, his eyes wide with psychotic fury. He slammed me against the server racks, the breath exploding from my lungs.
"You ruined everything!" he screamed, wrapping both hands around my neck, squeezing with terrifying force. Black spots danced at the edge of my vision. I kicked, clawing at his arms, but his grip was like iron.
Through the fading static in my ears, I heard a sharp crack. Victor’s eyes went wide. His grip loosened, and he collapsed forward, a dark red stain spreading across the back of his tactical vest.
Elias stood in the doorway, bleeding from a graze on his shoulder, holding Victor's fallen weapon. He rushed forward, pulling Victor’s heavy body off me. I gasped for air, coughing violently as Elias pulled me to my feet.
"The transfer," I choked out, pointing at the screen.
Elias looked at the monitor. The progress bar hit 100%. Transfer Complete. Data Packet Sent.
"It's done," I whispered. "We destroyed them."
"Not all of them," Elias said grimly, looking out into the hallway. The sirens of the Chicago PD were finally screaming in the distance, echoing through the empty streets below. Victoria Sterling was nowhere to be found. She had escaped in the chaos.
"We have to go," Elias said, grabbing my hand. "The police can't find us here. The people we just robbed make Calvin look like a choir boy. They will hunt us to the ends of the earth."
We fled down the fire escape, slipping into the freezing Chicago rain just as the first squad cars screeched up to the building. We disappeared into the labyrinth of alleys, finally reaching a secondary safe house Elias kept off the grid.
As I sat on the edge of the cheap motel bed, shivering in my damp clothes, I looked at the man who had just risked his life, and his freedom, for me. "You used to work for them," I said softly, the adrenaline finally crashing. "Why did you turn?"
Elias sat in the chair opposite me, wiping the blood from his face with a towel. He looked at me for a long, heavy moment.
"Because, Evelyn," Elias said, his voice raw with a dark, hidden pain. "Obsidian Vanguard didn't just employ me. They’re run by a board of directors. And the man sitting at the head of that table... the man you just stole two billion dollars from?"
He leaned forward, the shadows of the room carving harsh lines into his face.
May you like
"He's your father."
The silence in the room became absolute. The floor vanished beneath me. The real game hadn't even started.
