Chapter 13 - The Vault of Secrets

Zurich was a city wrapped in cold, calculating elegance. It was the financial heartbeat of the underworld, hidden behind pristine gothic architecture and snow-capped peaks. We moved through the cobblestone streets in the dead of night, the freezing rain cutting through my wool coat. Elias led me to an unassuming, centuries-old cathedral near the Limmat river.

"Cipher operates out of the catacombs beneath the church," Elias murmured, checking his six before we slipped through a heavy oak side door. "Let me do the talking. He’s paranoid, heavily armed, and doesn't take kindly to strangers."

We descended a spiraling stone staircase that smelled of damp earth and melting wax. At the bottom, a heavy iron gate blocked our path. Elias knocked twice, paused, then knocked three times. The gate groaned open, revealing a massive, cavernous room lit by the harsh blue glare of dozens of server racks. It was a digital fortress hidden in a medieval crypt.

Sitting in the center of the room, surrounded by glowing monitors, was a man in a tailored suit, sipping a glass of absinthe. He didn't look like a hacker; he looked like an investment banker.

"Elias," Cipher drawled in a thick, unplaceable European accent, not looking away from his screens. "I heard you burned your leash. Bold move. Stupid, but bold."

"I need a location, Cipher. The Architect," Elias said, stepping into the light, keeping me slightly behind him.

Cipher finally turned, his pale eyes sweeping over Elias before landing on me. A slow, chilling smile spread across his face. "Ah. The prodigal daughter. Evelyn Vance. Or should I say, the two-billion-dollar woman? Your little stunt in Chicago has sent the global markets into a panic. The Cartels are bleeding, the oligarchs are furious, and your father has placed a bounty on your head that would make a small country weep."

"I'm flattered," I said, stepping out from behind Elias, ignoring his warning glance. "But I didn't come here to discuss my net worth. I want the Architect. And I’m willing to pay."

"Information on the Architect isn't bought with money, sweetheart," Cipher chuckled, taking a sip of his green liquor. "It’s bought with blood. He’s a ghost. But as it happens, I know exactly where he will be in forty-eight hours."

"Where?" I demanded.

Cipher’s smile vanished. "At a private, high-stakes auction in Monaco. He’s acquiring a new kinetic weapon prototype for your father. But I’m not giving you the entry codes. Because you see, Evelyn, a fifty-million-dollar bounty is just too lucrative to pass up."

Before Elias could draw his weapon, the shadows of the catacombs shifted. Red laser sights cut through the blue glow of the servers, painting our chests. Dozens of heavily armed mercenaries stepped out from behind the stone pillars. We were completely surrounded.

"I told you I was paranoid," Cipher said smoothly, standing up and straightening his tie. "Arthur Vance sends his regards. He wanted me to tell you that he’s very disappointed in your recent behavior, Evelyn. He’s flying in tomorrow to discipline you himself."

Elias slowly raised his hands, his eyes darting around the room, calculating the impossible odds. "You’re making a mistake, Cipher. Arthur will kill you the second he has what he wants."

"Perhaps," Cipher shrugged. "But today, I am a very rich man."

I looked at the red dot hovering over my heart, my mind racing. I couldn't shoot my way out of this, and neither could Elias. But I was a forensic accountant. I didn't need a gun to destroy a man. I just needed data.

"You should check your Cayman accounts, Cipher," I said, my voice eerily calm, echoing in the crypt.

Cipher frowned, looking at me as if I were a bug on his shoe. "What are you talking about?"

"When we walked in, my phone automatically connected to your unsecured guest network," I lied effortlessly, praying my bluff would hold. "You have terrible firewall segmentation. I just ran a script that flagged your personal offshore accounts to Interpol’s cyber-terrorism division. In about ninety seconds, every cent you own will be frozen, and an international warrant will be issued for your arrest."

Cipher’s face went bone white. He lunged for his keyboard, his fingers flying across the keys in a frantic panic. "You bitch!" he screamed.

"Shoot the servers!" Elias roared.

Elias dropped to the floor, pulling his Glock and firing blindly into the massive server racks above Cipher's head. Sparks showered the room in a blinding explosion of electrical fire. The catacombs plunged into absolute darkness, save for the strobing blue arcs of dying servers. Gunfire erupted in the pitch black, the deafening roar of automatic weapons echoing off the stone walls.
