Chapter 5 - Rebirth

One Year Later
The sunlight streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows of my new penthouse overlooking the Chicago skyline. I stood at the marble kitchen island, sipping an espresso and reviewing the final quarterly reports for my newly established financial consulting firm.
The trial had been a media sensation. The local news ran with the story for months: the brilliant corporate executive who plotted to murder his wife with her best friend for a fifteen-million-dollar payout.
Calvin’s high-priced lawyers tried to negotiate a plea deal, but the audio recordings and the digital paper trail Elias had secured were airtight. When Victor, the hitman, was arrested in Miami a week later, he immediately flipped and testified against Calvin to avoid the death penalty.
Calvin was sentenced to forty years in a maximum-security federal penitentiary without the possibility of parole.
Stephanie, true to her cowardly nature, turned on Calvin the moment she was put in an interrogation room. She sobbed, played the victim, and claimed she was manipulated. The jury didn't buy a second of it, especially after hearing the audio of her complaining about how long it was taking me to die. She received twenty-five years as a co-conspirator.
I didn't attend their sentencing. I was too busy rebuilding my life.
With Elias’s help, I stripped Calvin of every legitimate asset he owned. I sold the Highland Park apartment, liquidated his investment portfolios, and used the capital to launch my own forensic accounting firm, specializing in uncovering hidden assets in high-net-worth divorces. I became a shield for women who were being lied to, manipulated, and trapped by men like Calvin.
My doorbell rang, pulling me from my thoughts.
I walked over and opened it. Elias stood in the hallway, holding a bottle of very expensive champagne and two crystal flutes. He looked as sharp and intimidating as the day I met him, but his eyes were warm.
“I heard the news,” Elias said, stepping inside. “The firm just landed the Sterling account. That makes you the most sought-after forensic accountant in the Midwest.”
“I had a good teacher,” I smiled, taking the glasses from his hand.
Over the past year, the fierce, protective dynamic between Elias and me had slowly blossomed into something deeper. There was no manipulation, no secrets, no walking on eggshells. Just absolute trust and mutual respect.
He popped the cork on the champagne and poured us each a glass. We walked out onto the massive balcony, the wind whipping gently against us as we looked out over the sprawling city below.
“To new beginnings,” Elias said, raising his glass.
I looked at the champagne bubbling in the crystal, remembering the last time someone had said those words to me in a cabin in Wisconsin. The contrast was beautiful.
I clinked my glass against his, a genuine, radiant smile breaking across my face.
“To new beginnings,” I echoed.

I took a sip of the champagne. It was crisp, sweet, and perfectly cold. Calvin and Stephanie had thought they could erase me from the world to fund their fantasy. But all they did was set me free. They built their own cages, and I had taken the empire.
Life was finally exactly as it should be. Beautifully, perfectly mine.
