Chapter 1 - The Image of Erasure

"Not anymore."

Helen’s words hung in the sterile air of the hospital corridor, defying gravity, defying the very laws of the universe Daniel Mercer believed he commanded.

"Helen, you are my assistant," Daniel hissed, his voice vibrating with a panic he was desperately trying to suppress. "Cancel the transfer. Call the bank. Put a freeze on the trust."

"I am the executive assistant for Vale House Properties, Mr. Mercer," Helen replied, her tone perfectly manicured, devoid of any loyalty to him. "My salary has always been paid by your wife’s family trust. I am calling as a courtesy to inform you that your personal effects have been couriered to a short-term rental in the Loop. The lease is paid through the end of the month."

Daniel’s phone vibrated against his ear. A message notification popped onto his screen.

"Check your messages, Daniel," Helen advised coldly, dropping the 'sir'. "Evelyn wanted you to have a clear picture of where you stand."

The call disconnected.

Daniel pulled the phone away from his face and opened the secure message from Helen. Attached was a high-resolution photograph, the file plainly named .

He stared at the screen, his breath stopping in his chest. The image was undeniable. It showed Evelyn, dressed in a flawless, bone-white trench coat, holding their son Oliver's hand as they walked up the airstairs of a sleek private jet. She did not look back. She looked like a woman who had just excised a tumor and was walking into the sunlight.

In the background of his immediate reality, visible through the glass pane of the private suite door, Mara was still resting against her white pillows, holding her pregnant belly, playing the fragile victim. Daniel looked from the screen to his mistress, the absolute, crushing weight of his miscalculation finally making contact.

Evelyn hadn't just left him. She had erased his access to her world.
