Chapter 5 - The Teterboro Arrival

Three thousand miles away, the Whitaker Air jet touched down smoothly on the tarmac at Teterboro Airport in New Jersey.

Evelyn Mercer stepped out into the crisp, cool New York air. She wore her trench coat, her designer sunglasses shielding her eyes from the bright afternoon sun. Oliver bounded down the steps ahead of her, excited by the waiting black SUV on the runway.

Her phone buzzed in her pocket. It was Helen.

The Chapter 11 paperwork for Mercer Hospitality is being drafted. He received the envelope at the hospital. The locks at the villa are secured.

Evelyn smiled. It wasn't a smile of malice, but of perfect, clinical satisfaction.

For years, Daniel had mistaken her silence for weakness. He had thought that because she managed the unglamorous, heavy lifting of their life, she was bound to it. He never realized that the person who builds the foundation is also the only person who knows exactly where to place the explosives to bring the whole house down.

"Come on, Oliver," Evelyn said, sliding into the luxurious leather backseat of the SUV, pulling her son close. "Let's go look at our new penthouse."

The car pulled away, leaving Chicago, the debt, and Daniel Mercer entirely in the past.
