Chapter 3 - The Financial Guillotine

Sitting in his car on the side of a wealthy suburban road, Daniel pulled out his laptop and connected it to his mobile hotspot. If the house was gone, he still had Mercer Hospitality. He was a CEO. He had leverage.
He logged into the corporate banking portal.
His stomach dropped into a bottomless void.
The primary operational accounts for Mercer Hospitality were frozen. A flashing red banner across the dashboard indicated a "Critical Margin Call - Primary Guarantor Withdrawn."
During the pandemic, when his hotels were bleeding money and facing total foreclosure, it was Evelyn who had saved him. She had quietly stepped in, using her massive personal trust to backstop his corporate loans, ensuring the lenders gave him the forbearance he needed. She had never asked for a thank you. She had just handled it.
By selling the villa and severing her financial ties, Evelyn had legally withdrawn her guarantor status.
His phone rang. It was his Chief Financial Officer, breathless and terrified.
"Daniel! The lenders just issued a notice of default! Without Evelyn's trust backing the mezzanine debt, they are calling in seventy million dollars by the end of the business day! We don't have the liquidity! They're going to seize the flagship properties!"
"Stall them!" Daniel yelled. "Tell them I'm securing alternative financing!"

"There is no alternative financing, Daniel!" the CFO shouted back. "The market knows! Evelyn's legal team filed the separation of assets publicly an hour ago. You're radioactive. We are filing for Chapter 11 by Monday."
Daniel closed the laptop. The silence in the car was deafening. In less than four hours, his wife had dismantled a decade of his arrogance without raising her voice.
