Chapter 10: The Choice

The air on the terrace was cool, carrying the distant, rhythmic hum of the city below.

It was Friday night. The scandal of Marcus Sterling’s arrest had dominated the news cycle for forty-eight hours. The transitional housing project was secured, the permits were reinstated, and the foundation was untouchable.

I stood on my balcony, holding a glass of cabernet, looking out at the glittering skyline of Manhattan. I was not the woman who had cried in the shadows of a gala. I was the architect of my own destiny.

I heard the slide of the glass door behind me.

Luca stepped onto the terrace. He had let himself in—a privilege I had quietly extended to him months ago, though tonight it felt entirely different.

He walked up beside me, resting his forearms on the railing, looking out at the city. The silence between us wasn't heavy; it was the comfortable, charged quiet of two people who had just conquered a continent together.

"Sofia is asleep?" Luca asked, his voice low and raspy.

"Out cold," I smiled, taking a sip of wine. "She had a long day at the park with my father."

Luca turned his head to look at me. The city lights caught the sharp angles of his jaw, the deep, dark intensity of his eyes. He didn't look like a business partner tonight.

"Marcus pleaded guilty to the bribery charges to avoid federal court," Luca said. "Vanessa was deported this afternoon."

I absorbed the information, feeling the final, heavy weight lift from my shoulders. "It’s really over."

"The war is over," Luca agreed. He reached out, taking the wine glass from my hand and setting it gently on the small patio table.

He stepped into my space. The air between us seemed to crackle, the slow-burning tension of two years finally reaching its flashpoint.

"I told you we were going to have a conversation when the dust settled," Luca murmured, his hands coming up to rest lightly on my waist.

"I remember," I breathed, my heart hammering a frantic, beautiful rhythm against my ribs.

"For two years, I have stood beside you," Luca said, his voice thick with raw, unfiltered emotion. "I have watched you rebuild your life, your confidence, and your empire. I promised myself I would never push you. I promised I would let you heal. I would let you dictate the terms."

He looked down at me, his gaze dropping to my lips.

"But I am done waiting, Elena," he whispered fiercely. "I don't want to be your business partner anymore. I want to be the man you choose. Every single day. I want to build a life with you. Not because you need me to save you, but because I cannot imagine a world where I am not standing by your side."

Tears pricked the corners of my eyes, but they were not tears of sorrow. They were the physical manifestation of absolute, overwhelming joy.

For so long, I had believed that loving a man meant shrinking myself to fit into his world. I had believed that peace required silence.

But looking at Luca DeSantis, I realized the truth. A real man didn't want a quiet woman. He wanted a queen who could rule alongside him.

I reached up, wrapping my arms around his neck, pulling him down to my level.

"I don't need saving, Luca," I whispered against his lips. "But I do want you."

Luca let out a ragged breath, a sound of absolute surrender, and kissed me. It wasn't a desperate, grasping kiss. It was deep, anchoring, and possessive—a promise sealed in the cool night air. The heat of his touch sent a shockwave through my entire body, erasing the past and igniting the future.

When we finally broke apart, I rested my forehead against his, breathing in the scent of the man who had loved me enough to let me find my own strength.

I looked over his shoulder at the glittering lights of Manhattan. The city was ruthless, fast, and unforgiving.

But as Luca pulled me tighter against his chest, I knew I would never fear the dark again.

Because I had finally stepped into the light. And the view was spectacular.
