Chapter 8: The War Room

The penthouse office of DeSantis Capital was a fortress of glass and steel, suspended high above the chaotic arteries of Manhattan. By midnight, it had been transformed into a war room.

Empty espresso cups cluttered the massive oak conference table. Blueprints, legal briefs, and the damning documents Ryan had provided were spread out like a battle map.

Luca stood by the window, his suit jacket discarded, his tie loosened, speaking in rapid, flawless Italian on his phone. He hung up and turned to me, his dark eyes burning with an intensity that sent a shiver down my spine.

"I just woke up the head of the federal anti-corruption task force," Luca said, walking back to the table. "They are reviewing the bribery evidence Ryan provided. But it will take them forty-eight hours to secure an arrest warrant for the city inspector. Marcus Sterling is filing the injunction at 9:00 AM tomorrow. We need a way to block him before the gavel falls."

I leaned back in my leather chair, rubbing my temples. The exhaustion was threatening to pull me under, but the thought of Marcus and Vanessa tearing down the sanctuary I had built kept my blood running hot.

"He wants the land," I muttered, staring at the property deeds. "He is using the debt as leverage to seize it. But what if the debt suddenly doesn't exist?"

Luca braced his hands on the table, leaning in close. The scent of cedar and expensive coffee washed over me. "The debt is locked into a private trust, Elena. We can't just pay it off without his authorization. He engineered it to trap you."

I looked up at him, my mind snapping the pieces into place. "Not if the trust itself is legally invalidated."

Luca’s brow furrowed.

I grabbed a highlighter and flipped open the corporate structuring documents Ryan had stolen. "Look at this. Marcus transferred the debt into a shell company registered in Vanessa’s name to hide his monopoly footprint. But Vanessa is not a US citizen; she is here on a sponsored corporate visa tied to Ryan’s old firm. When Ryan fired her, her visa grace period expired."

Luca’s eyes widened, tracking the text I had highlighted. "She is technically holding undocumented assets."

"Exactly," I said, a dangerous thrill rising in my chest. "Under federal banking regulations, a shell company registered to an undocumented foreign national holding domestic commercial debt is subject to immediate asset freezing by the Treasury Department. The debt doesn't belong to Marcus. And as of 8:00 AM tomorrow, it won't belong to Vanessa, either."

Luca stared at me. The absolute brilliance of the maneuver hung in the air between us. He didn't just look impressed; he looked completely, utterly captivated.

"You are terrifying," Luca whispered, his voice dropping an octave.

"I had a good teacher," I breathed, suddenly hyper-aware of how close he was.

Luca reached out, his knuckles gently brushing a stray lock of hair behind my ear. The touch was electric, wiping away the exhaustion and the corporate strategy in a single heartbeat.

"I didn't teach you this," Luca murmured, his gaze dropping to my lips. "You were born for this. You just needed a reason to stop playing small."

I didn't pull away. For years, I had guarded my heart like a fortress, terrified that letting another man in would mean losing myself again. But looking into Luca’s eyes, I didn't see a man trying to conquer me. I saw a man who wanted to stand beside me while I conquered the world.

"Help me end them tomorrow," I whispered.

"With pleasure," he promised, his thumb tracing my jawline. "And when the dust settles, you and I are going to have a very long conversation about the future."
