Chapter 9: The Boardroom Execution

At 8:45 AM, the Manhattan Supreme Court was a buzzing hive of legal maneuvering.

Marcus Sterling had reserved the largest arbitration room. He sat at the head of the long table, exuding the smug, untouchable arrogance of a man who believed he had already won. Vanessa sat beside him, wearing a triumphant smile and a suit that cost more than a car.

They expected me to walk in with a team of panicked lawyers, begging for an extension or offering a settlement.

Instead, I walked in with only Luca.

I wore a sharp, blood-red blazer. My heels clicked against the marble floor with the rhythm of a ticking clock. I didn't look at Vanessa. I didn't look at Marcus. I sat at the opposite end of the table, folded my hands, and waited.

"Ms. Moretti," Marcus sneered, looking at his gold Rolex. "I am surprised you showed up. Your environmental permits have been revoked. You are in default on the property debt. I suggest you sign the deed over to my holding company now, and I might allow you to keep the name of your little charity on the door."

Vanessa leaned forward, her eyes glittering with malice. "It’s over. You can't win everything."

I smiled. It was the same smile my father used before he destroyed a rival. Cold. Polite. Lethal.

"I don't need to win everything, Vanessa," I said smoothly. "I just need to win today."

I opened my briefcase and pulled out a single, stamped document, sliding it down the length of the polished table.

Marcus stopped it with his hand. He looked down. His smug expression evaporated, replaced by a deep, genuine confusion that quickly morphed into panic.

"What is this?" Marcus demanded.

"That," Luca spoke up, his voice booming with absolute authority, "is an emergency asset freeze issued by the United States Treasury Department."

I leaned forward. "You thought you were clever, Marcus. Hiding the debt in a shell company under your fiancée’s name. But you forgot to check her immigration status. The federal government does not take kindly to undocumented foreign nationals hoarding commercial real estate debt. The assets have been seized. The debt is nullified."

Vanessa turned pale, grabbing Marcus’s arm. "Marcus, what is she talking about? I have a visa!"

"Your visa was sponsored by my ex-husband," I told her, my voice turning to ice. "When he fired you for sleeping with him, your sponsorship ended. You are holding illegal assets, Vanessa."

"It’s a trick," Marcus snarled, standing up. "I will have my lawyers tie this up in federal court for a decade!"

"You won't have time," I replied, checking my own watch. "Because at this exact moment, the FBI anti-corruption unit is raiding the office of the city inspector you bribed to revoke my permits. We handed them your banking records last night. Extortion, bribery, and corporate fraud. I believe the mandatory minimum sentence is fifteen years."

The color completely drained from Marcus’s face. He looked at the door, then at Vanessa, recognizing instantly that she was the weak link that had brought his empire crashing down.

"You did this," Marcus hissed at Vanessa, his voice dripping with venom. "You told me she was weak! You told me this was an easy kill!"

"I... I didn't know!" Vanessa stammered, shrinking back from the man she thought would elevate her.

"You’re done," Marcus barked, pulling his arm away from her. He looked at his lawyers. "Get me out of here. Fix this."

Marcus stormed out of the room, leaving Vanessa sitting alone at the table, entirely abandoned by the power she had tried to steal.

I stood up, buttoning my blazer. I looked down at the woman who had once haunted my nightmares. She looked small. Pathetic. Broken.

"You thought taking my husband was a victory," I said softly, the absolute finality of the statement hanging in the air. "But you didn't take my power, Vanessa. You just took out the trash."

I turned and walked out of the room, Luca right beside me, leaving the ghost of my past sitting in the ruins of her own ambition.
