Chapter 2 - The Six A.M. Raid

"Step away from my sister!"

Michael’s voice thundered through the room, vibrating with a rage I had never heard from him before. My older brother stormed into the suite, but he wasn't alone. He was flanked by four uniformed police officers and two plainclothes detectives from the major crimes division.

Ryan dropped his coffee cup. It shattered against the linoleum floor, dark liquid splashing across his expensive shoes.

"Michael?" Ryan stammered, his face instantly draining of blood. "What the hell is going on? We are prepping for surgery! You can't just barge in here with the police!"

Detective Harris, a tall, imposing woman with zero tolerance for nonsense, stepped directly between Dr. Vance and my bed. She looked at the syringe in the doctor's trembling hand. "Put the needle down on the tray, Doctor. Now."

Dr. Vance was frozen, his professional demeanor entirely shattering. He slowly lowered the syringe.

"Officer, there is a misunderstanding," Ryan said, trying to summon his usual charismatic arrogance, though his voice cracked humiliatingly. "My wife is high-risk. She's delirious. We are trying to safely deliver our child."

"The only thing you're trying to deliver is a murder, Ryan," I said.

I pushed the heavy hospital blankets off my legs and swung them over the edge of the bed. The helpless, drugged facade vanished instantly. I sat up perfectly straight, staring directly into the eyes of the man who had tried to put a price tag on my life.

Ryan stared at me in absolute horror. "Emily, honey, what are you talking about? The medication is making you paranoid."

"I poured the medication down the sink, Ryan," I replied, my voice echoing with a cold, devastating clarity. "I was awake when you stood in the sitting room last night. I was awake when you offered Dr. Vance five hundred thousand dollars to infect me and make it look like a surgical complication. And I was awake when you complained about having to hide Vanessa and her five-month pregnancy in that downtown apartment."

Ryan physically staggered backward, his mouth opening and closing like a suffocating fish.

"That's a lie!" Dr. Vance shouted, his panic turning into desperation. "She's hysterical! This is defamation!"

Michael pulled his phone from his pocket and pressed a button. Instantly, Ryan’s own voice filled the hospital room, playing from the recording I had sent hours earlier.

“Half tomorrow morning before surgery. The rest after the funeral. Once Emily is gone, everything transfers cleanly to me. Vanessa is already five months pregnant... I want this settled.”

The silence that followed the recording was deafening. The two nurses in the room gasped, backing away from Dr. Vance in absolute horror.

Detective Harris pulled a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from her belt. "Ryan Sterling and Dr. Julian Vance, you are both under arrest for conspiracy to commit first-degree murder. Turn around and put your hands behind your backs."

Ryan tried to run. He bolted for the door, but two officers tackled him to the floor before he made it three steps. He screamed, sobbing hysterically as they forced his arms behind his back and clicked the cuffs shut. Dr. Vance didn't fight; he simply collapsed against the medical cart, burying his face in his hands as an officer detained him.

"Emily, please!" Ryan sobbed from the floor, his cheek pressed against the linoleum. "I didn't mean it! I was stressed! It was just talk!"

I looked down at the pathetic, broken man I had once loved. "Enjoy prison, Ryan. I hear the architecture there is very secure."
