Chapter 4 - The Compliance Attorney's Wrath

The next three months were a relentless, methodical dismantling of their lives.
Ryan was denied bail. Because he had plotted to kill a pregnant woman for financial gain, the judge deemed him a severe flight risk and a danger to society. He spent his days rotting in a maximum-security holding cell at Cook County Jail, entirely isolated.
Dr. Vance’s life imploded instantly. The medical board permanently revoked his license the moment the charges were filed. His wife divorced him, taking their children and fleeing the state to escape the overwhelming media circus. He was facing twenty years in federal prison, and in a desperate bid to reduce his sentence, he flipped on Ryan entirely, providing prosecutors with a mountain of evidence detailing their negotiations.
Vanessa tried to play the victim. She hired a cheap lawyer and attempted to claim she had no idea Ryan was planning to kill me, spinning a story that she was just a naive, pregnant woman caught in a bad romance.
But she forgot who she was dealing with.
I was a corporate compliance attorney. I specialized in finding digital footprints people thought were erased. I hired a private forensic investigator to dig into the devices the police had seized from her apartment.
We found deleted text messages from the night before my surgery.
Vanessa: Is it confirmed for tomorrow? I can't wait to finally be a family.
Ryan: Vance is on board. 500k. You’ll be Mrs. Sterling by Christmas.
Vanessa: Make sure it looks natural. I don't want the insurance payout delayed.
She wasn't a naive victim. She was a co-conspirator.

I handed the recovered texts directly to Detective Harris. Vanessa was arrested the following week on charges of conspiracy to commit insurance fraud and accessory to attempted murder. Because all her assets were frozen, she couldn't afford a high-priced defense. She ended up relying on an overworked public defender who advised her to take a plea deal.
The icing on the cake was the civil lawsuit I filed against Ryan, Dr. Vance, and the hospital for emotional distress, medical malpractice, and breach of fiduciary duty. The hospital settled out of court for an undisclosed, astronomical sum, eager to bury the scandal of their corrupt obstetrician. I took every single penny of that settlement and deposited it directly into an irrevocable trust for my daughter, Maya.
