Chapter 1 - The Venom and the Vow

The metallic tang of fear flooded my mouth, overriding the bitter, chalky aftertaste of the pills Flynn had been feeding me. I remained slumped against the cold brass railing of the yacht's mid-level stairwell, my breathing shallow, as the laughter of my in-laws echoed from the lower deck. They were toasting to my murder. They were celebrating the impending slaughter of my parents. The sheer, unfathomable evil of it paralyzed me for exactly ten seconds. Then, a different sensation began to rise from the depths of my stomach, cutting through the chemical fog invading my brain. It was pure, unadulterated rage.

I did not become the sole heir to the Sterling empire by being fragile. My father had raised me in boardrooms, teaching me to spot a predator from a mile away. But Flynn had been a masterpiece of deception. He had played the humble, brilliant architect who didn't care about my money, charming his way past my defenses and my family’s rigorous background checks. His parents, Aidan and Fiona, had portrayed themselves as quaint, loving academics. It was all a theatrical production, funded by my trust fund, culminating in this multi-million-dollar floating slaughterhouse.

I forced my leaden legs to move. I couldn't go back to the master suite just yet; I needed to purge the poison. I crawled through the shadows of the corridor, my silk nightgown whispering against the plush carpet, until I reached a small, discreet guest powder room. I locked the door and collapsed in front of the marble toilet. I shoved two fingers down my throat, gagging violently until the drugged lobster bisque and the remnants of the white pills came rushing up. I did it again and again, tears streaming down my face, until there was nothing left but stinging bile.

I dragged myself to the sink, turning on the cold water and splashing it over my face. The icy shock sharpened my senses. I stared at my reflection in the gilded mirror. The blushing, starry-eyed bride who had boarded this yacht three days ago was dead. The woman looking back at me had cold, dead eyes, completely stripped of illusion.

I had exactly four hours until midnight. Four hours until Flynn would wrap his strong arms around me, walk me to the edge of the abyss, and cast me into the black Caribbean water. They thought they were dealing with a naive, love-struck girl who was incapacitated by sedatives. They had completely forgotten one crucial detail about this vessel. My father had gifted us the Oceanic Queen, which meant he had vetted the crew. The captain wasn't some random hire; it was Captain Vance, a man who had served in the Navy with my father and had been a loyal friend to the Sterling family for three decades. Flynn thought the crew was hiding from the storm. He didn't realize they were my private army.
