Chapter 11 - The Billionaire’s Shadow

Professionally, Apex Media was expanding at an unprecedented rate. We had completely dominated the domestic affiliate marketing space and were now preparing to launch a massive international division. We were untouchable. Or so I believed.
It began on a freezing Tuesday morning. I was sitting at the granite island, sipping espresso and reviewing our latest ad creatives. I had recently upgraded our design team to Canva Pro, utilizing the premium asset libraries to create hyper-converting thumbnails for our new campaigns. Mark was upstairs, getting the twins dressed.
Suddenly, my encrypted corporate cell phone buzzed. It was Chloe, my lead marketing director.
“Claire,” Chloe’s voice was breathless, vibrating with a raw, unfiltered panic that instantly made my blood run cold. “You need to look at the offshore accounts. Right now.”
“Chloe, take a breath. What’s going on?” I asked, my CEO instincts instantly overriding my quiet morning.
“It’s not just Meta this time, Claire,” she gasped. “Our payment gateways are collapsing. Someone has launched a coordinated, multi-million-dollar financial assassination against Apex Media. They are draining the escrow accounts.”
I threw my laptop open and logged into our highly secured banking portal. My heart stopped. The screen flashed aggressive red error codes. Millions of dollars in working capital—funds earmarked for our international launch—were being systematically siphoned into untraceable offshore crypto wallets.
“How is this happening?” Mark’s deep, calm voice echoed as he walked into the kitchen, taking one look at my pale face. He immediately set the twins safely into their highchairs and rushed to my side.
“Someone bypassed our biometric security,” I whispered, staring at the screen in absolute horror. “They didn't hack us from the outside. They used an internal authorization code.”
Before I could even process the magnitude of the betrayal, my phone rang. The caller ID was a scrambled international number. I answered it, putting it on speaker.
“Hello, Claire,” a smooth, deeply privileged, and sickeningly arrogant voice echoed through my flawless kitchen.
“Who is this?” I demanded, my hands clenching into fists.
“My name is Arthur Vance,” the voice purred. “I was the silent venture capitalist who funded Daniel’s little deepfake syndicate. When you destroyed him and seized his assets, you cost me fifty million dollars. I don't like losing money, Claire. So, I am taking yours. Every last cent.”
“You’re committing federal wire fraud,” Mark said, his voice dropping to a lethal, protective rumble. “The FBI will have your IP address before noon.”

Arthur let out a dark, humorless laugh. “I don't leave digital footprints. I deal in shadows and algorithms. By midnight tonight, Apex Media will be entirely bankrupt, and your flawless new life will be repossessed. Consider it a wedding gift.”
The line clicked dead. The silence in the kitchen was deafening. Arthur Vance wasn't just a bitter ex-husband; he was a billionaire apex predator. And he had just declared war on my family.
