Chapter 4 - The House of Cards Collapses

The fallout was swifter and more brutal than even I had anticipated.
Once Daniel was escorted off the property with nothing but a duffel bag of cheap clothes—exactly what his mother had ordered me to pack—the full weight of his crimes caught up to him.
The next morning, federal investigators, tipped off by my forensic accountant, raided Daniel’s architectural firm. They seized his computers, his ledgers, and his frozen offshore accounts. The "successful businessman" facade was entirely stripped away, revealing a desperate, fraudulent con artist who had been stealing from his own clients to fund his mother's luxury lifestyle and his own inflated ego.
Without my money to keep the Ponzi scheme afloat, Daniel’s firm declared bankruptcy within forty-eight hours. His clients filed massive lawsuits. The bank, alerted to the forged signature, called in the fraudulent line of credit. Daniel was left completely destitute, sleeping on the couch of a terrified, bewildered Evelyn in a cheap motel because her credit cards had all declined when she tried to check into the Ritz-Carlton.
For weeks, my phone was bombarded with voicemails left on my lawyer's secure line. Daniel went from furious, to bargaining, to utterly pathetic.
“Maya, please, I’m facing ten years in federal prison for the wire fraud. Just talk to the bank. Tell them you authorized the signature. I’ll do anything. I’ll leave you alone forever. Please, you’re my wife, you’re supposed to protect me.”
I didn't lift a finger. I listened to the voicemails while sitting by my pristine pool, drinking iced tea, feeling absolutely nothing for the man who had traded his humanity for a temporary power trip.
Evelyn tried to call me too. The woman who had told me I was lucky her son "tolerated" me was now leaving sobbing, hyperventilating messages begging me to reinstate her allowance because she couldn't afford her car payments or her country club dues.
“Maya, I’m an old woman! You can't just leave me with nothing! Daniel lied to me! I didn't know the money was yours, I swear! Please, I’m your family!”
I forwarded her voicemails to my spam folder. The irony was poetic. She had kicked me out of my own house, commanding me to leave everything her son had paid for. In the end, she was the one left with absolutely nothing, because her son had never paid for a damn thing.

The family members who had sat silently sipping their tea while Daniel slapped me tried to reach out, sending pathetic apology letters, claiming they were "frozen in shock" and didn't know what to do. I blocked every single one of their numbers. I had no room in my life for cowards who watched a woman bleed and chose to look at the ceiling.
Six weeks later, Daniel was formally indicted on multiple counts of wire fraud, embezzlement, and forgery. Because he had violated the restraining order by continuously trying to contact me, his bail was revoked. The man who had demanded I learn my place was now sitting in a six-by-eight concrete cell, waiting for a trial he was guaranteed to lose.
