Chapter 9 - The Predator's Trap

By Saturday afternoon, the plan was flawlessly in motion.

Julian had successfully cloned the drive, verifying that it contained a labyrinth of offshore routing numbers, shell company registries, and communication logs tying Victor’s cartel directly to hundreds of federal crimes. It was a digital death sentence.

I sent Leo and his nanny on a private, unlogged flight to a secure safehouse in Aspen, guarded by three armed private security contractors Julian had vetted personally. My son was safe. That was all that mattered.

Now, it was time to deal with the monster at my door.

I stood in the center of my sunlit living room, watching Julian wire the estate. We weren't just using the hidden cameras I had installed during my marriage; Julian was integrating them into a live, encrypted broadcast feed linked directly to the FBI’s regional cyber-crimes director, a contact Julian had cultivated during his military days.

"The moment Victor steps into this living room, the FBI will have a live feed with audio and visual evidence," Julian explained, securing a microscopic microphone beneath the Italian marble coffee table. "But Maya, you are the bait. The tactical team will be stationed two miles away to avoid tipping Victor off. If he realizes it’s a trap before they breach the gates, he will not hesitate to kill you."

"He won't realize it," I said, a cold, predatory smile spreading across my face. I was wearing a simple, elegant white linen suit. I didn't look like a victim. I looked like a queen waiting for a peasant to bend the knee. "He thinks I am the same terrified, battered wife Daniel used to control. He thinks my kindness is a weakness."

At exactly 8:00 PM on Sunday night, the intercom at my front gate buzzed.

I pressed the release button. The heavy iron gates swung open, allowing a sleek black SUV to glide up the driveway.

I stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, holding a crystal glass of sparkling water, my heart beating with a steady, lethal rhythm.

Victor stepped out of the SUV. He was flanked by two massive, armed men in dark suits. They walked up to my front door and let themselves in.

Victor strode into my living room, looking around at the light, airy redesign with absolute disgust. "You have terrible taste, Maya. But I’m not here for a consultation."

He stopped a few feet away from me, his eyes locking onto mine. "Do you have it?"

I reached into my pocket and pulled out the black encrypted drive. I didn't hand it to him. I placed it gently on the center of the Italian marble coffee table.

"Fifty million dollars," I said smoothly, crossing my arms. "Daniel was a fool to try and hide this from you."

Victor smiled, a cruel, triumphant expression. He reached for the drive.

"But before you take it," I interrupted, my voice echoing clearly through the silent room, ensuring the hidden microphones picked up every single syllable for the FBI. "I want you to confirm, on the record, that upon receiving this ledger containing the cartel’s offshore routing numbers, you will permanently cease all threats against my son, Leo."

Victor paused, his hand hovering over the drive. He looked at me, his shark-like eyes narrowing. "You have a lot of nerve, Maya. But yes. The cartel considers this debt settled. You give me the routing numbers, and we pretend you don't exist."

He picked up the drive and slipped it into his jacket pocket. "Smart girl. It’s a shame Daniel didn't have your survival instincts."

He turned to leave.

"Victor," I called out, my voice dropping to a terrifying whisper.

He stopped, looking over his shoulder.

"I didn't give you the drive to settle a debt," I smiled, pulling a small remote from my blazer pocket. "I gave it to you so you would be holding the murder weapon when the police arrived."

I pressed the button.
