Chapter 6 - The Unpaid Debt

The profound peace that settled over my California estate lasted for exactly fourteen months. I had spent that time transforming myself from a surviving victim into an absolute force of nature. With the massive financial settlement I had secured from Daniel’s ruined empire, I launched my own luxury interior design firm, Aura Estates. I specialized in gutting toxic, oppressive spaces and rebuilding them into sanctuaries of light and power. My client list was a closely guarded secret of Silicon Valley billionaires and Hollywood elite.
I was untouchable. My two-year-old son, Leo, was thriving, filling the halls of our Italian marble home with joyous, unburdened laughter. The hidden cameras I had installed during my marriage remained active, but they no longer recorded a husband’s abuse; they simply stood as silent sentinels over our perfect, impenetrable kingdom.
But in the world of dark money, the past rarely stays buried.
It was a crisp Thursday evening in October. I was hosting an exclusive, invitation-only charity gala at a downtown art gallery to benefit domestic abuse survivors. I wore a backless, emerald-green silk gown that commanded the attention of the entire room. I was sipping a glass of vintage champagne, speaking with a prominent tech investor, when the temperature in the room seemed to drop by ten degrees.
A man detached himself from the shadows near the entrance. He was tall, wearing a bespoke charcoal suit, with eyes as cold and dead as a shark’s. He didn't belong to my world. He moved with a quiet, lethal grace that made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.
He approached me, seamlessly cutting off the tech investor with a terrifyingly polite smile. "Maya. What a magnificent event."
"Thank you," I said smoothly, my CEO instincts instantly flaring. "I don't believe we’ve been introduced."
"My name is Victor," he said, his voice a low, gravelly whisper that barely carried over the string quartet playing in the background. "I was a... silent partner of your ex-husband, Daniel. Before his unfortunate incarceration."
The champagne in my glass suddenly felt like acid. Daniel’s financial fraud conviction had been based on embezzling investor funds. But a man like Victor wasn't a standard corporate investor.
"Daniel is in federal prison, Victor," I replied, keeping my voice completely steady. "Our assets were divided by a federal judge. If he owes you money, you’ll have to take it up with the Bureau of Prisons."
Victor stepped uncomfortably close. He didn't look at me; he looked out at the glittering crowd, maintaining the illusion of a friendly chat. "Daniel didn't just embezzle corporate funds, Maya. He was washing money for my employers. He managed to hide a very specific encrypted hard drive—a ledger—before the FBI raided his offices. A ledger that contains the routing numbers to fifty million dollars in offshore accounts."
"I have no idea what you’re talking about," I said, a cold dread pooling in my stomach.
"He told us he hid it in the house," Victor continued, his voice dropping to a lethal, bone-chilling register. "Your house. I know you gutted the interior. I know you threw away his things. But you are going to find that drive, Maya. Because if you don't hand it over to me by Sunday night, I will pay a visit to that beautiful California estate. And I hear little Leo is a very light sleeper."

My blood instantly turned to liquid nitrogen. The world around me blurred, the sound of the string quartet fading into a high-pitched ringing.
Victor gave me a polite, terrifying nod. "Sunday night, Maya. Don't make me ask twice."
