Chapter 2 - The Midnight Audit

The rain was freezing against Noel’s face as she hailed a cab on the street outside Atlas House. Her cheek throbbed, and her blouse was stained with a mixture of her own blood and tomato bisque, but she didn't feel the cold. The adrenaline singing in her veins had completely overridden any physical pain.
She gave the driver the address to their sprawling penthouse in the Gold Coast neighborhood. She had roughly two hours. Darius would have to go to an emergency room for the minor burns, and he would likely spend an hour trying to perform damage control with the investors before Leila inevitably brought him home. Noel didn't have time to mourn a dead marriage. She had a war to fund.
When she unlocked the penthouse door, the quiet luxury of the space felt entirely foreign. She ignored her sprawling, custom-built closet. Instead, she walked straight into Darius’s private study.
Darius was a charismatic salesman, a man who could charm a room into handing over millions of dollars. But he was careless. He hated paperwork, hated spreadsheets, and absolutely despised details. For seven years, Noel had been the invisible architect of Holt Enterprises. She was the one who balanced the books, structured the corporate entities, and managed the offshore accounts. Darius thought she was just a glorified assistant he could easily replace with a younger model like Leila. He had forgotten who actually held the keys to the castle.
Noel locked the heavy mahogany doors of the study and booted up his desktop. She didn't need to guess his password; she had installed the security software herself.
She bypassed his personal files and dug directly into the restricted corporate drives. What she found over the next ninety minutes was worse than simple infidelity. Darius wasn't just sleeping with his director of partnerships; he was actively embezzling from his own investors to fund Leila’s extravagant lifestyle. The cream silk dress at the dinner party was nothing. There were digital footprints of shell companies funneling capital into luxury real estate leases, private jet charters, and heavily padded "consulting fees" directed straight into an account registered under Leila Morgan's name.
Furthermore, the expansion deal Darius was supposed to close tonight—the deal Noel had meticulously arranged the dinner for—was built on a mountain of fraudulent projections. He had cooked the books to make the company look solvent when, in reality, Holt Enterprises was drowning in debt.
Noel plugged a high-capacity encrypted flash drive into the computer. She copied every ledger, every forged document, every hidden bank transfer, and every email between Darius and Leila detailing their plot to push Noel out of the company with nothing.
She then logged into their joint accounts. Legally, she was entitled to half. Pragmatically, she knew Darius would try to freeze her out by morning. She executed a series of untraceable wire transfers, moving every single liquid dollar of her rightful share into an impenetrable offshore trust she had quietly established a year ago when her suspicions about Leila first began to take root.
By the time she heard the unmistakable chime of the private elevator opening in the foyer, her flash drive was secure in her pocket. She had packed a single weekender bag with her passport, her jewelry, and the damning evidence.
She stepped out of the study just as Darius burst through the front doors, leaning heavily on Leila. His face was covered in a thick layer of burn ointment, his head wrapped in medical gauze, and his expensive suit swapped for cheap hospital scrubs.
He froze when he saw her standing by the door with her bag.
"You," he snarled, his voice hoarse. He took a step toward her, his fists clenched, but Leila pulled him back, her eyes darting nervously around the room.

"Don't worry, Darius," Noel said softly, her hand resting on the doorknob. "I'm leaving. You and Leila can have this beautiful, empty life. I hope you enjoy the view, because it's the last expensive thing you'll ever see."
Before he could process her words, she walked out, the heavy door clicking shut behind her, sealing him inside a tomb of his own making.
