Chapter 5 - A Dish Served Cold

Two years later, Atlas House was just as beautiful, warm, and exclusive as it had always been.
The rain tapped against the tall black windows overlooking Chicago’s wet streets, and crystal glasses caught the glow from the wall sconces. But this time, the private dining room was filled with a different kind of energy.
Noel sat at the head of the table, wearing a stunning, custom-tailored emerald gown. She raised a glass of expensive vintage champagne. Around her sat twenty of the most powerful female executives, investors, and founders in the Midwest. This wasn't a desperate pitch to save a dying company; it was a celebration of the acquisition Noel had just closed, a deal that officially made her a billionaire on paper.
"To knowing our worth," Noel toasted, her voice clear, confident, and entirely unbothered by the ghosts of the past.
The women cheered, raising their glasses in a chorus of genuine laughter and respect.
As the dinner progressed, the same young server from two years ago approached the table. She had been promoted to head of private dining, partially due to a glowing recommendation Noel had quietly given the restaurant management.
The young woman leaned in with a warm, genuine smile. "Ms. Benton, the chef would like to know if you'll be having the tomato bisque for the first course tonight?"
Noel looked at the server, a shared, silent acknowledgment passing between them. The memory of the scalding soup, the screaming, the absolute destruction of a monster.
Noel smiled, her eyes crinkling with real joy.
"No, thank you," Noel replied softly, setting her champagne flute down on the pristine white tablecloth. "I think I lost my taste for soup a long time ago. But please, bring out the steak. I like to finish what I start."
May you like
As the server nodded and walked away to bring out the feast, Noel looked out at the glittering lights of the city she now owned. Darius was sitting in a cell, Leila was a disgraced ghost, and the empire they had tried to steal was thriving under the name of the woman they had tried to break.
Power is easiest to misuse when you’re arrogant. But when you’re quiet, calculated, and completely unafraid of the fire, you don't just burn the house down. You build a castle on the ashes.
