Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Guillotine

For three days, Noel vanished. She stayed in an unassuming boutique hotel under her maiden name, watching the chaos unfold from the safety of a burner laptop.
Darius immediately tried to spin the narrative. He leaked a story to the local business tabloids, claiming his wife had suffered a "tragic, unprovoked mental breakdown" due to the stress of a high-society lifestyle. Leila fed the rumors, whispering to their mutual friends that Noel had become violent and unpredictable, and that Darius was a saint for putting up with her.
But Darius’s biggest problem wasn't his ruined reputation; it was his ruined expansion deal. The investors at the dinner had pulled their funding immediately after the soup incident, terrified of the instability. Desperate to keep his fraudulent company afloat, Darius scheduled an emergency board meeting for Thursday morning, pleading with his three largest majority shareholders to bail him out.
He didn't know that Noel had spent those three days having quiet, private breakfasts with every single one of those shareholders.
On Thursday at 10:00 AM, Darius stood at the head of the glass-walled boardroom at Holt Enterprises. His face was still red and peeling, but he was wearing a fresh designer suit, trying to project total control. Leila sat by his side, nodding encouragingly as he clicked through a PowerPoint presentation filled with lies.
"The minor disruption earlier this week has been handled privately," Darius assured the stone-faced men sitting around the table. "My wife is seeking the psychiatric help she desperately needs. But returning to business, our quarter-three projections are stronger than ever. If we can secure this bridge loan..."
The heavy glass doors of the boardroom swung open.
The entire room went completely silent. Noel walked in. She was not wearing the subdued, accommodating pastel dresses Darius had always preferred. She wore a razor-sharp charcoal pantsuit, black stilettos, and an expression of absolute, terrifying calm. She was flanked by two of the most ruthless corporate litigators in Chicago.
Darius dropped his presentation clicker. It clattered loudly against the mahogany table. "Security!" he shouted, his voice cracking. "Get this deranged woman out of my building!"
The two security guards standing in the hallway didn't move.
The oldest shareholder, a billionaire named Arthur Vance, held up a hand, silencing Darius instantly. "Sit down, Darius," Arthur commanded, his voice cold. "Noel is here at my express invitation."
Leila went perfectly pale, sinking lower into her expensive leather chair.
Noel walked slowly to the end of the table, directly facing her husband. She placed a thick, leather-bound dossier onto the polished wood.
"Darius," Noel said smoothly, "you told the board that I had a mental breakdown. I suppose realizing your husband is a fraudulent, embezzling sociopath would break anyone's mind. But thankfully, my math skills remained completely intact."
She tapped the dossier.
"Gentlemen, inside this folder, you will find the real quarter-three financials. You will also find irrefutable proof that your CEO has siphoned over four million dollars of company capital into a shadow LLC owned by his mistress, Leila Morgan. Furthermore, the bridge loan he is currently asking you for is not to expand the company; it is to cover a massive, illegal margin call that is going to bankrupt this firm by Friday."
Darius’s face contorted in sheer panic. "She's lying! She forged those documents because she's a bitter, jealous wife! Arthur, you can't believe this bitch!"
Arthur Vance didn't even look at Darius. He opened the folder, glanced at the forensic accounting breakdown Noel had meticulously prepared, and closed it.
"The board held an emergency vote before you arrived this morning, Darius," Arthur said quietly. "You are stripped of your title as CEO, effective immediately. Your equity shares are frozen pending a federal investigation. You will be escorted from this building, and if you attempt to access any corporate servers, we will have you arrested for criminal trespass."
Darius staggered backward as if he had been physically struck. He looked at Leila, expecting her to defend him, but Leila was already calculating her exit. She stood up, grabbed her designer purse, and backed away from the table.
"I... I didn't know anything about the money," Leila stammered, throwing Darius completely under the bus. "He manipulated me. I'm resigning."

She practically ran out of the boardroom, leaving Darius completely, utterly alone.
Noel watched as two security guards grabbed her ex-husband by the arms, dragging a screaming, sobbing Darius out of the empire he thought he owned. The satisfaction didn't taste like revenge; it tasted like absolute, undeniable freedom.
