Chapter 10 - The Titanium Crown

I stepped out from behind the steel island, my silk robe immaculate, the strobe lights casting long, sharp shadows across my face. I looked down at the man who had once promised to love me, currently weeping in a puddle of his own pathetic failure.
"You thought you could build a parallel life in my sanctuary," I whispered, my voice echoing with lethal, uncompromising authority over the hum of the alarms. "You thought you were the king of the board. But you forgot that I am the one who owns the lights."
The heavy mahogany doors of the estate burst open. A tactical team of armed police, guided by the GPS coordinates I had forwarded earlier, flooded the room. Their laser sights cut through the dim light directly onto Daniel’s chest.
"Daniel Morgan!" the lead officer barked, slamming my ex-husband face-first onto the floor. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit wire fraud, corporate extortion, and breaking and entering!"
I watched without a single ounce of pity as the last remaining venomous root of my past was dragged out of my home in heavy steel handcuffs, screaming as his entire existence collapsed into absolute ruin.
Six months later, the crisp spring breeze swept across the sprawling, manicured lawns of my estate. The toxic fallout of Daniel and Rachel was nothing but a footnote in the incredible, unstoppable history of my life.
I stood on the back patio, the golden afternoon sunlight warming my skin. The magnificent Japanese-style roof of my home provided a profound sense of grounding. The nightmare was truly, finally over.
Michael walked up behind me, wrapping his strong arms around my waist and pulling me back against his solid, comforting chest. He rested his chin on my shoulder, looking out at the endless horizon.
"The final SEC clearances just came through," Michael murmured, pressing a soft kiss to my temple. "The company is completely secure under your name. We are untouchable."
"It's perfect," I smiled, leaning my head against his shoulder, listening to the steady, powerful rhythm of his heart.
Michael turned me around to face him. His dark eyes softened with a profound, overwhelming love that still took my breath away. He gently lifted my left hand, pulling a sleek velvet box from his jacket. Inside was a stunning, custom-cut diamond ring, set in a band of solid titanium.
"You built a fortress, Claire," Michael said, his voice thick with raw, beautiful emotion. "But I want to build a forever. Will you marry me?"
May you like
"We built a kingdom, Michael," I corrected softly, stepping up on my toes to look deeply into his eyes as I slid the ring onto my finger. "And yes. Always yes."
As I pulled my brilliant, fiercely loyal partner in for a deep, passionate kiss, surrounded by the beautiful, indestructible life we had bled to build, the world around us crystallized into absolute perfection. I had walked through hell. I had been betrayed by a fraud and hunted by my own memories. But I had not burned. I had taken the fire and used it to forge a titanium spine, rewriting the rules of the game until my beautiful, victorious world was finally, eternally at peace.
