Chapter 5 - The Trash is Taken Out

The illusion of their profound, undeniable love completely disintegrated the moment the money vanished.
"You froze the accounts?!" Rachel shrieked, turning on Daniel with the ferocity of a cornered animal. The realization that she had just homewrecked a marriage for a man who was now completely broke hit her like a freight train. "How am I going to pay my rent?! You promised me we were going to buy a house!"
"Shut up, Rachel!" Daniel roared, entirely abandoning the woman he had just risked his entire existence to protect. He looked at me, tears of humiliated, pathetic panic streaming down his face. He fell to his knees on the hardwood floor. "Please, I have nowhere to go! My cards are declining! I don't want her, I want you! It was a mistake!"
"The fifteen minutes have started, Daniel," I whispered, staring down at the pathetic, weeping fraud on my floor without a single ounce of pity.
They didn't stay to argue. The sheer, terrifying reality of the armed security guards waiting outside broke them completely. They scrambled upstairs, frantically throwing clothes into garbage bags and suitcases, screaming vicious accusations at each other down the hallway. Daniel blamed Rachel for being reckless. Rachel blamed Daniel for being stupid enough to leave the iPad synced.
They walked out the front door carrying their bags, stripped of their arrogance, their wealth, and their dignity. I stood on the front porch and watched them walk down the driveway into the cold evening air, violently arguing as they tried to figure out how to order a rideshare with frozen credit cards.
I didn't shed a single tear. I closed the heavy oak door, engaged the deadbolt, and walked back into my quiet, beautiful house.

I picked up the pale-gray apron from the dining table, walked into the kitchen, and dropped it directly into the trash can. I grabbed a bottle of bleach and a sponge, thoroughly scrubbing the kitchen counter until it shined perfectly in the ambient light.
Daniel had thought he could build a parallel life right in the center of my home. He never understood that when you invite a parasite into a woman’s sanctuary, she doesn't burn the house down. She simply sanitizes the surfaces, takes out the trash, and enjoys the absolute, beautiful silence of a space that belongs entirely to her.
