Chapter 4 - The Liquidation

Luca’s hand twitched toward his pocket, but he knew better than to draw a weapon against four of the Bennett family's elite enforcers.
"You can't touch the syndicate money, Bella," Luca snarled, though the desperation in his eyes betrayed him. "The Commission will hunt you down. They'll kill you."
"The Commission is the one who approved the transfer," I said, my voice dropping to a whisper that cut through the cedar-scented air like a scalpel. "They never liked how young you were, Luca. They never liked how reckless you became after I left. So, I offered them a deal. The Moretti infrastructure, entirely intact, managed quietly by the Bennetts. All they had to do was strip you of your title and your access."
Right on cue, Luca’s phone began to vibrate violently in his cashmere pocket.
He didn't answer it. He knew exactly what the call was. It was his underboss, calling to tell him that the safe houses were locked, the accounts were zeroed, and his men were currently pledging loyalty to a new family.

Vanessa let out a sharp, hysterical sob, backing away from Luca as if he were suddenly contagious.
